we were freezing ...
by vtveen
We visited Punta Arenas during late spring (early December) and still it can be ‘winter’. Specially when visiting the penguin colonie (sometimes with a boat trip) it can be (very) cold. Besides the weather can change very quickly; during our visit we had rather good weather in the morning in Punta Arenas and in the afternoon at Seno Otway it was cloudy, very windy and very cold.
What to pack for Punta Arenas (and Patagonia)
Clothes: best to wear in layers
Wind- and waterproof jacket
Good shoes (specially if you intend to do the trekking on the glacier)
Hat/cap and gloves UV filter sun glasses and Sunscreen lotion, 30+ (the sun is very intensive, even if there are clouds) Enough space on your memory card.
Plaza Munoz Gamera

You can relax on this Plaza watching people going by, tourists taking turns for a picture in front of the statue, or browsing at the artifacts of the open market.
If you are lucky enough you can hear some sweet music coming from the harmonica of a street seller...
Internet

There is a very nice internet in the Hostal Calafate 2.
It is clean and has seperate rooms for smokers and non-smokers.
They claim to have a fast connection but it isn't as fast as we are used to.
English is spoken here and they come by often with offers of candy.

The Graveyard
by MikeAtSea
I have seen many graveyards around my travels around the world, but never one like this. Unimaginable that one is at the end of the world - but the “Palaces” the rich and wealthy built themselves some hundred years ago are unbelievable. A must to see if you are in Punta Arenas! The cemetery was inaugurated in 1894 on an area donated by Sara Braun industrial tycoon of the time.
