ushuaia to punta arenas and up the west coast of Chile

by CarolynJones53

I am going on an antarctic crusies arriving back in Ushuaia on 11 December and then meeting my friend who is flying into Punta Arenas. Please could anyone tell me how I can get to Punta Arenas and whether it is more cost effective to hire a car for a week or so to visit the TDP etc or whether the buses are reliable and economical. Thanks

I would not think a car hire would be very cost effective, a one way rental from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas most likely would be very expensive. You can check this web site which details the bus routes connecting the two, it is about a 10 hour trip and you must clear Chilean customs so don't pack food that will get you in trouble at the border crossing :) when you get to this site scroll down towards the bottom to see the various routes available. Yes the buses are very reliable and cost effective.

I agree to the poster above :
renting a car in Ushuaia will allow you mostly to drive inside Arg. only.
Buses seemed to be reliable for me, although I just had a rental car there (avis), but we could see them whereever we drove in the countryside.
In some occasions we even saw the busdriver coming into a restaurant and announcing that they will start in 3 min instead of just driving away at the time indicated.
Flying will be faster of course but driving through Tierra del Fuego is also quite spectacular.

Perhaps you could travel by bus from Ushuaia to Punta Arenas (www.ushuaia.com.ar and/or www.tierradelfuego.org.ar) and rent a car for your transportation to Torres del Paine and back to Punta Arenas.
If time allows you also could visit El Calafate in Argentina.

happy travels

Another palace on Plaza Muñoz Gamero

by globetrott

This building at the corner of Plaza Muñoz Gamero used to be the "Sociedad Anonima Comercial del Sur" founded in 1874 by Menendez Behety. It is a travel-agency nowadays and a part of it is also used by the norwegian Konsulate. This house attracted my attention by its great architecture, just enlarge my photographs and you will see some fancy decorations at its facade !

seno otway - magellan penguin paradise

by willy_wonka

its no secret that i am a bit of a fan of the penguin. those adorable little animals who waddle around, diving into the sea... what isnt there to love? so when i heard that we had the chance to go to penguin sanctuary and see them in action, i was sooo excited!

the magellanic penguin Spheniscus magellanicusis is located, as the name suggests, in the south of south america, in the magellan region. found in chile, argentina and the falklands, this little critter is actually considered to be of 'medium' penguin size, at around 70cm and weighing sometimes up to 6kg in weight. living off the plentiful marine life in the magellan region, the penguins can sometimes reach the age of 25 years old.

they are a fascinating species of penguin, and if you are interested, you can check the wiki link here

Magellans Strait

by Ekahau

The square in the center of town is surrounded by beautiful old trees and the Cathedral and mansions built at the turn of the last century by the Robber barons of this part of Chile mostly big stockbreeders. The biggest robber baron of all was the Braun family and on the square is the “Sara Braun Palace”, built in 1895. Sara Braun Palace is now houses the Club de la Union and a very nice Hotel the Jose Nogueira.

Porvenir

by Ekahau

This VT would recommend a trip to Porvenir on the Island of Fires, Tierra del Fuego so called because as magellan passed by the the Onas natives lit fires on the hillsides near the sea. I caught the Melinka ferry early in the morning from Punta Arenas for a cost of less the $US 6. The Trip was about three and a half hours crossing the Strait of Magellan to reach the coasts of Tierra del Fuego.

The Small city of Porvenir with about 4,200 people was a good lunch stop I ate at the Club Croata. Spent about an hour visiting the museum which goes into some detail about the Onas people
