La Moneda

by emmarivas

I will like to have the schedule (date and hours) for the Change of Guard in La Moneda every day. Thanks

Re: La Moneda

by Huentetu

The changing of the guard takes place every second day at 10:00 am. There are variables however, and it is best to phone to find out the dates when you are in Santiago. Local phone number 690-4502.
The police website used to publish a schedule but no longer does.

Travel Tips for Santiago

Santiago in Winter

by kiwigal_1

The winter in Santiago is from June to August and last year (2007) got down around zero during winter and even snowed a little bit one day but generally it isn't really really cold. The mountains around it though are covered in snow and certainly this can affect bus travel between Santiago and Mendoza. The route is travelled frequently though and they clear it quite quickly.

The worst thing about Santiago in winter though is not the cold but the smog... there are days in Santiago that are called "pre-emergency" days when the school kids aren't allowed to do sports outside and there are big restrictions on vehicle use and log fires.

Easy to escape from the city

by tommix

What is wonderful about Santiago it's the fact that if you're tired by the city you can easly and quite fast escape from. After less then one hour driving you can find yourself in the middle of nature in gorgeous mountains and far from civilization. Just to enough to take a breath of a pure air and relax.
My preffered summer destination is the direction of Farellones with natural reserve of Yerba Loca...

In the middle of nowhere

by jlanza29

Like is several countries Santiago decided to build there airport in the country side in the middle if nowhere !!!! As soon as you exist the customs area directly in front of it... there are shuttle bus service into the city. Taxi's usally run about $35-$40 US into the city and the shuttle bus about $8 US....most drop you off at your hotel or busy intersection thoughout the city where various forms of transportation are avaiable !!!!

Happening

by femmevazaha about Happening

It is open all day from lunch through dinner. Most restaurants close from 4-8 so this is a great choice for most North Americans who like to eat a little earlier than is normal down here. The filet mignon is out of this world! The sides are nothing special though.

Pablo Neruda ---an poet, artist, designer and more

by crazyman2

Take a taxi to Pablo Neruda's house at the foot of the hill. There is a cafe within the house ---so once you've bought your ticket for a guided tour (in Spanish or English) relax with a coffee, sandwich etc.
The house itself is so interesting: it has been designed to look like a small ship in places and the many rooms are enchanting. There is so much to take in!
A guide is helpful and will give extra information if prompted ---our one seemed to avoid overloading us with too much until we kept asking about this and that.
The over-long shoes are in a studio, behind glass ---but they looked crazy! All very surrealist!
One thing: indoor photos are not allowed.
After the tour you can easily find the funicular railway to take you to the top of the hill ---or you may prefer to stop half-way to visit the zoo.
