 | | | | Hotel Carrera: One of the best... | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
N.B. A glitch here on VT is listing this hotel tip under the wrong name. The hotel I am writing about is the Hotel Orly Two stays at Hotel Orly confirmed the advice we were given - that this is one of the best hotel options in Santiago - small, reasonably priced, very comfortable and quiet - and deservedly popular, so booking ahead is most advisable. Prettily furnished (but not in the least fussy)with antique-style pieces and soft colours, and immaculately clean, the rooms are welcome haven from the hustle and bustle of the city streets. Breakfast in the little garden room was a great way to start each day, and the guest's internet access on the first floor was often a good way to end it with a bedtime email to family and friends back home. A book exchange table in the small lounge was a thoughtful touch. I would certainly stay here again, and have already passed the contact on to a friend who will be visiting Santaiago shortly, I know she will be as happy with her stay as we were.
The rooms may be small but they are comfortable and elegantly furnished, as are the public areas with their oriental rugs, soft lighting and attractive floral displays; the location is excellent (a quiet, tree-lined street just a block from a metro station, a short walk from the river and around the corner from busy Providencia Avenue ); breakfast is an ample buffet of fresh fruit, ham, cheese, eggs, breads and cake that can be taken a pretty glass-roofed conservatory; the hotel cafe on the streetfront serves excellent coffee and light meals as well as providing a platform for one of my favourite occupations - people watching (and one of Santiago's best and most popular Italian restaurants, Liguria, is all but next door); rates are very reasonable and the staff are helpful and obliging ... all in all, the Orly is an outstanding example of the sort of hotel all travellers hope they'll find - a charming and individual small hotel Leave a Comment Theme: HotelPrice: US$80-120 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Pedro de Valdivia 027, ProvidenciaPhone: (56-2) 2318947Directions: 1 block from Pedro de Valdivia metro stationWebsite: http://www.orlyhotel.com/

I had 2 nights in this hotel and in many ways it was quite a good choice : First of all it is in walking distance from the centre of town and it has a lovely garden and even a swimming-pool (see my other photographs!) My single-room had aircondition, BUT it was also very hot day and night, because it was one of the few rooms with the only window facing the inner hall, where a wintergarden was giving some extralight into the hall, but also the sun was burning there extremely hot all day long ! It might make sense to ask for a room facing the garden-side of the building !!! I payed 50 euro per night, including breakfast in Jan. 2008.
Quite unique about this hotel is the "estacionamiento privado", a private car-park for quite a lot of cars and even buses, that is totally fenced in and the high gates are beeing locked at night. I had a machine to make hot water in my room, and the tea-bags were complementary by the hotel. There was a minibar as well. | | | | Hotel Diego de Almagro: Centric | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
A 4 stars hotel, centric, on the main street, modern, excellent decoration, good restaurant, copious breakfast. The service was a little leisurely, at least for me. Un hotel 4 estrellas, céntrico, sobre la avenida principal, con excelente decoración, un buen restaurante y un desayuno abundante. El servicio era un poco lento, al menos para mi gusto. | | | | Hostels and hotels near the city centre: Barrio Paris Londres | Tip Rating: | | | | |
Several travellers' hotels are in this area, due to its proximity to the city centre, its quietness and distinctive architecture (more than one VT’er have stayed here...I know that). In the picture, the Hostal Internacional (US$ 10/day), right across the street from the quite famous Hostal Londres (US$ 8/day). More upmarket places nearby are the Hotel Paris (US$ 18/person) and the fancy 4-star Hotel Fundador and Kempinski
Just one block south of Alameda, behind the Iglesia de San Francisco, is the Barrio (Quarter) Paris Londres, a small area of buildings that somewhat resemble the European architecture of the 1850’s or so (once it was chosen as a location for filming Austrian street scenes for the movie Seven years in Tibet). Its cobblestoned, narrow and winding streets, their 3 or 4-storey buildings and the small plaza are appealing at any time of the day or the night, and an interesting photo subject in foggy winter nights. Metro stations Universidad de Chile and Santa Lucia are handy.

I stayed in this hotel for just two nights at the end of a South American cruise. Oh how I wish I knew in advance how simply wonderful it is - I would have stayed for a week! The checkin staff are very efficient. There must have been perhaps 100 of us checking in after the cruise and we were asked to wait until 1pm when all rooms would be ready. It was a bit of a wait, but 1pm was still a couple of hours before international checkin time and on the dot of 1pm we all got our room keys. While we waited the hotel served complimentary tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits. Our room was on the 6th of 7 floors. As you can see from the attached pic, we had a spectacular view of the pools, gardens, and the Andes through a huge window which was angled at the centre to make the most of the view. Our room was spacious and very comfortable, with two wonderful 4ft beds. Sheraton now use those amazing Heavenly Beds that Westin advertise, but of course they're all part of the one group. It's hard not to have a terrific night's sleep in these beds. The poolside area is generous with plenty of sunbeds that most people pull into the shade of the large leafy green trees that are set in pockets throughout the gardens. There's a gazebo beside the pool which houses a pool bar and a full restaurant, which was so good that it deserves a seperate tip. There are three other restaurants inside the hotel, plus an excellent and spaciously comfortable bar. Service throughout is faultlessly efficient and friendly. I would advise you to ask for a room on the 4th, 5th, or 6th floors as the views are best there. There is a 7th floor, but you must pay a supplement to stay there. There's a tower block which is part of the hotel but is treated seperately and is supposed to be more upmarket. However, from what I could see the views from all rooms there are of the City.
The view is one of the best hotel room views I have ever seen. I used to sit in the room each evening reading and watch the colour of the mountains change as the sun set - what a breathtaking sight. The view is also of part of the city and the reflecting setting sun turns a couple of them to glistening gold....against the pinkish purple hues of the evening mountains it's unbeatable. | | | | Hotel Tres Puntas: Five, four, or three stars--your choice | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
The only variable in the costs of packages available to stay at Valle Nevado is the hotel room. This is because the lift tickets, Express Lunch, dinner at any of the restaurants, and breakfast at any of the hotels is included in everybody's package. In addition, all of the facilities of the three hotels are open to the guests of the others. The hotels vary mainly by the luxury quotient: the five star Hotel Valle Nevado, the four star Hotel Puerta del Sol, and the three star Hotel Tres Puntas. I stayed at the Tres Puntas, which was very comfortable and more than adequate to my needs. My room had a humidifier, plentiful hot water, and a little balcony.
The Tres Puntas is the only one of the hotels with a pub and live music. Leave a Comment Theme: HotelDirections: About 50 meters from the lift ticket office.
