lan. airlines

by mob325

Am I better of buying three trips santiago to Puerto Montt - Bariloche to Buenos Aires and Buenos Aires to Iguazu when I am in Chile or buying in advance in the United States. Any idea of price ? Is lan only airline?

For Chile also: www.skyairline.cl (Sky Airline)
For Argentina also: www.aerolineas.com.ar (Aerolineas Argentina)

LAN is supposed to be the most reliable airline in the region but most people have had very few problems with Sky. Aerolias Argentinas seems to be doing much better lately but they are forever in financial trouble. I would be tempted to buy my tickets close to the time of travel unless it is high season.

Travel Tips for Santiago

Andes Mountains

by sswagner

Chile is best known for its natural features. The continent's highest mountains are not far from Santiago. As you go east from the city, you enter this snow capped range. The range runs essentially the entire length of the country, so you are never far from them. Thus, there are endless trekking and mountain climbing opportunities in this part of the world. Seeing the Andes.

Skiing and Snowboarding - Ski Total

by kiwigal_1

Santiago is the perfect place to base yourself if you are planning to include some skiing or snowboarding in your Chilean adventure. Three skiifields are located about an hour away from Santiago. They are Valle Nevado, La Parva and Colorado. There is another skiifield about 2 hours away called Portillo. Accommodation is available on the mountains however they usually require that you stay up there for 7 days.

As I was living in Santiago, I made day trips up the mountain using a local ski transportation company called Ski Total. If you haven't brought your own gear you can rent it at the Ski Total offices in Las Condes.

Flight from New Zealand/Australia to South America

by kiwigal_1

The route between the Pacific and South America is the route with least competition unfortunately making it one of the most expensive to fly on. I am a New Zealander who lives in Santiago and so fly the route frequently.

The two direct flights are either a codeshare flight run by LAN (www.lan.com)with Qantas as their partner that starts in Sydney, stops in Auckland and ends in Santiago. The other is Aerolineas Argentinas which also starts in Sydney, stops in Auckland and continues to Buenos Aires.

Of the two, the Aerolineas flight is usually the cheaper one however the quality of service etc is worse than LAN. Personally I would only take the LAN flight.

Recently Qantas introduced a flight direct between Sydney and Buenos Aires which sometimes has some deals worth considering.

Los Buenos Muchachos

by kiwigal_1 about Los Buenos Muchachos

Los Buenos Muchachos is a Chilean parillada restaurant with a live show with dances from all over Chile. The show is interactive and very popular with both Chileans and foreign visitors.

I went here with Christian on our first date and when my parents came to Chile for our wedding we took them here on Christmas Eve. The serve a Parillada (mixed BBQ) for 2 people but I prefer to order a cut of meat (Costillar de Cerdo for example) and a mixed salad. The salads are huge and enough to share.
