bus from mendoza to santiago...stops along the way

by sharkydmc

WE ARE TAKING THE BUS FROM MENDOZA TO SANTIAGO . WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF THERE ARE ANY STOPS ON THE CHILE SIDE FOR A STOPOVER BEFORE SANTIAGO

The ski resort Portillo. There are also some monasteries on the way but I am not sure if I would plan a stopover for the night in the nearby townships.

The bus only stops to clear migration and customs.

I did not use this bus myself but read in two or three travel guides that they drop you off along the way. (Not sure how to arrange pick-up though.)

I was too fast...

Manzur Expediciones runs buses to Portillo on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday for about the same price. Buses leaves at 8:30 AM from the Plaza Italia in front of the Teatro Universidad de Chile.

Check out beforehand if this service is not in winter only.

Turbus should also have connections to Portillo and Mendoza.

The buses do not stop except at customs as Toid says. Trips to Portillo have to be done by tour companies as regular bus companies do not go there. Los Andes is before Santiago and there are things to visit in the area (vineyards, spas) but best done with your own transport.
Transport between Los Andes and Santiago is frequent.

Good to know. So they could only do it starting in Santiago? Just a pity that the travel guides are not correct.

You might be able to get a bus driver (Turbus et al) to drop you off on the road to Mendoza if you wanted to visit Portillo but you would have to have very clear arrangements for moving on or back from Portillo as you would otherwise have to wait on the road for a bus with room and hope it would stop for you. There are a variety of tour and transfer companies offering transport specifically to Portillo.

Travel Tips for Santiago

Electricity-plugs

by globetrott

Electricity-plugs will look like on my photograph, so it makes sense to search for an international adapter including this one with 3 holes already at home. In Chile it might be difficult to find the right adapter for your hairdryers, battery-chargers etc.
Voltage is 220 Volt and with my plug-adapter I had no problems to charge my camera-batteries !

Iglesia San Francisco de Borja

by globetrott

Iglesia San Francisco de Borja is a small chapel next to parque San Borja. It has an interesting neo-gothic interior and seems to be quite a popular place for marriages. I passd by it accidentally, while walking back from Cerro San Cristobal. Next metro-station is "U.Catolica"
churchservice is normally at 12.00 noon !

The buses stop running

by nyl

The micros (buses) in Santiago"run" until 2:30 am. However, this does not mean that the micro you took during the day will be rounding the corner any minute. You will notice a steady decline of the number of buses running as the night goes on. By around 12, the buses are fewer and generally only running on main roads (like Providencia), so make sure you always have enough money for a taxi ride home, just in case!

If you're on Cerro San Cristobal, or you just don't have the time to visit the Chilian vineyards outside Santiago, visit Restaurante Camino Real Enoteca.
We were there to sample the wines, we didn't have time for the vineyards :(. Not only is Enoteca a restaurant but it is a wine museum, were you can taste the exhibits. My favorite wine was the over ripe Pisco Sour!!! :) OK I didn't eat there, I'm sure its good. The restaurant serves both Chilean and international items for lunch and dinner.

Play in the snow

by Quero

There's really only one thing to do in wintertime at Valle Nevado (and July is mid-winter in the southern hemisphere): hit the slopes.

The lifts run from 9 in the morning until 6 in the evening, so you don't have to get out of bed too terribly early in order to manage a full day of skiing. If you stay at the resort (as opposed to visiting as a day tripper from Santiago), your lift passes will be included in your hotel package.

The resort has a ski-in design, so you only need to tote your skis from the end of the trail a short distance to the ski storage rooms.

If want to learn to ski, need to brush up your skills or are in the mood to board but don't know how, there is a ski school ready to help you gain mastery. The instructors speak a variety of languages.
