I heard that there was some sort of entry fee/tax that you have to pay when you arrive in Chile by plane. Is this true, and how much is this tax? Any ifo would be appreciated.
It is about $135 USD for the entry visa.

Citizens of many countries including USA and Australia can enter chile without a visa for up to 90 days. there is a reciprocity tax, charging the national the same fee the respective countries charge for visa for chileans. australians pay 35 usd, that is what i paid three times but it is valid for nearly one month, so if you enter within that period you dont pay again. mexicans pay 15 or usd and the Yanks pay higher fees, i thought it was 100 usd but the above poster as said 135 usd so it might have risen since my visit.
The reciprocity fee for citizens of the USA is US$131, payable in dollars cash or by credit card. You pay at the bottom of the escalator before going through passport control.
Do you know what the entry fee is for Canadian citizens. We will be in Chile less than 24 hours.
I just posted on the other thread. You pay if you leave the transit area, it doesn't really matter for how long.
US$132 reciprocity fee, payable in USD cash on arrival, will be charged for tourists. The receipt is regarded as a multiple entry visa and is valid until your passport expires.
suerte

Barrio Bellavista is an old quarter of Santiago, where you will still find lots of such flat buildings like in a small town or village, even though it is just a few steps from the citycentre. Barrio Bellavista is close to the place, where the funicular to Cerro San Cristobal starts and on my way from Lastarria to the Cerro S.C. I saw lots of them and those are my favorite ones.
Santiago has a good subway station. This is very interesting to visit the city.
As in every big city, you can walk your feet off, that's why it can be very handy to use the subway from time to time. Then you have mre time to enjoy the city and it is less tiring.
Is it dangerous ? wel I would say not more then in subway systems in other big cities. You need to watch your stuff, and beware during the busy hours.

At heart of the Civic Quarter, La Moneda was for many decades not only the government's house, but also home for the President in office, although this changed in the 60's.
Before the 1973 military coup, which was the beginning of Gen. Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship, it was open to the public but, fearing an attack on him, Pinochet closed it; in 2000, President Ricardo Lagos opened it again. Nowadays, its patios can be walked across freely just by asking permission for it to the Carabineros at the north gate (no documents nor ID asked). Going upstairs is not allowed, although journalists can get an extended visit permit at the entrance.
Photographying the inside is freely allowed to everybody.
When certain ceremonies are held, crossing permission is suspended during the ceremony, and then resumed.
During the military coup, it was put under siege, tank-shelled and rocketed by fighter aircraft, some of whose "scars" can still be seen under the repairs made afterwards, and which took about 2 years to finish.
