Chile Visit 7/30-8/14

by Jamoksni

I am a student who is going to be visiting Chile alone from 7/30-8/14 and was wondering if there were any Americans or other tourists who were going to be there at the same time. If so, please contact me as I would feel safer going out in bigger groups.

Thanks

Book yourself into one of the hostels which cater to backpackers (some have private rooms if you want). That will give you plenty of contact with other solo travelers like yourself.

I never felt more unsafe in Santiago than in any other big cities like Rome, London, Paris or New York, but of course it makes sense to use common-sense and be careful !

Chile is probably the safest country I've lived in.

Please, there are many tourists that visit chile, it is quite safe, you will have no problems.the locals are very friendly and helpful. to be honest if you are scared of experiencing new travel, why bother and just stay at home.....

There are a lot of foreigners traveling around Santiago and Chile all the time. I agree with the first post, stay at a hostel and you should meet a lot of people in your same situation. Also, a lot of tourists usually go to the Pub Crawl (www.santiagopubcrawl.com), that might be a good idea to get to know the city and meet new people.

Travel Tips for Santiago

a University building in Santiago

by chancay

in this photo you see a part of the "Campus oriente" of the "Universidad Catolica de Chile", one of the universities with large history in Santiago de Chile. The campus of this university has wonderful buildings with a great patio to recreate and relax.
Other important universities in Santiago are the "Universidad de Chile" and the "Universidad de Santiago de Chile". I passed by because the mom of a good friend has studied here and I heard before about the beautiful building and in deed, I would have liked to study there, the buildings are beautiful, the atmosphere is something very special.

Skiing in the Andes

by IIGUANA

The ski resorts, which can be reached by bus or car, are located less that an hour's drive from Santiago. Farellones-EI Colorado, La Parva and Valle Nevado are all situated on the slopes of the Andean mountains. From June to October these resorts, as well as others in Chile, are visited by both foreign and Chilean ski fanatics, because of the excellent slopes, good snow, nice weather and modern infrastructure.
Also near Santiago, but 145 kilometers northeast is Portillo with its traditional hotel of international fame, overlooking the beautiful Del Inca Lagoon. Skiing/snowboarding equipment

Nice Bar, cool place

by mev1976 about Cafý Escondido

Cafe Escondido, its a nice place, not fancy at all, just a cool place with good music, and great atmosphere. You can drink and have a good time.
the place is full during the weekends, itýs not so big, and very cheap so I recomend you to go there to talk. There is dress code.

Chilean Traditional Food and Music

by leonardogalfano about Bandolero, Albergue de Creadores

In a 19th Century old House this unique place as provide us with a great evening of Chilean Traditional Food and Great Music with and outdoor Patio Quincho of Parrilladas and a beautiful Horno de Barro (Clay Oven). The Empanadas are fantastic with a special great flavor in the mix of meat, onions, boiled eggs, raisins and fresh olives, a great pie cooked in the outdoor oven. The parrilladas are prepared in front of your eyes and you can talk to the Parrillero (Chef) and ask some tips in how to prepare them, great experience and let me tell you that the flavors and seasoning of the meats are out of this world. Great Salad Bar and many tipical dishes in the menu, desserts and more. Sea food dishes also and a house made marinera soup. In one word a great place to know and understand a little more of Chilean Culture, the owner speak English and have a lot of history tales to share from trips in the country side and recomendations of places to visit, a guided tour of Santiago and Chile with the sound of spanish guitars. Lomo a lo pobre, was great with a good size portion of meat 200 gramos, with fried onion, french fries and 2 eggs in top, uf... what a dish.
The Parrilladas al Plato give us the opportunity to taste Bife de Lomo (Steak), Longanizas(Pork Sausage) and Prietas (Blood-Sausage) with the choice of Pollo Asado (Barbeque Chicken) or Chuletas de Cerdo(Pork Ribs) served wit a choice of Potatoes or Rice.
Salads are great and fresh, Choclo (Corn), Apio Palta (Celery with Avocados), Lettuce and Coliflower, Potatoes Salad and many more.
An the King of Chilean Asados "Pebre" a great salsa with Pan Amasado, what more can you ask ffor one evening with great Chilean Music and Floor Dance.
The ambience and surroindings are great and no waiting to be served, I recomend this place because they make me feel special and welcome.

Paris Style Café

by Popstar99 about Cafetto

More than just Coffee...great cakes and a great lunch menu for about $4500. The waitresses are very friendly and the whole place has a Paris style athmosphere, it is not very big, so if you order big, the tables almost won't hold. Try the Strudel or the Lemonpie. Strudel (Pie) - Not exactly what I am used to, but very good.
