entry fee at airport
by raymondocanuck
Can you pay this fee by credit card or do you need US cash?
Re: entry fee at airport
by kyoub
The fee must be paid in cash upon arrival to Santiago Chile.
They will put the receipt in the back of your passport.
It will be good for as long as you use the same passport.

Credit cards are accepted. I paid with MC two years ago.
I would have USD cash as backup in the very unlikely chance their credit processing system is down. Also, many hotels offer an exemption from the 19% IVA tax if you are a tourist paying with USD cash or foreign credit card.

if their credit card system is down, it's their fault, not yours.

You still aren't getting past immigrations if you don't pay.
I guess they could escort you to an ATM and then an AFEX exchange booth to get your USD. Hell of a lot more convenient just to be ready to pay in cash if necessary.

haha. they are pretty good about having working credit card machines in chile, but the cash couldn't help. when i had to pay that tax i couldn't find the man. turns out he was on the floor of his booth sleeping.

Credit cards are accepted--at least in March and April 2009.
Travel Tips for Santiago
Airport Arrival Reciprocity Fee
by kiwigal_1
At Arturo Merino Benitez Airport in Santiago there is an airport reciprocity fee that is charged to all citizens travelling on US, Mexico, Canada, Australia and Albania passports.
If you are travelling on one of these passports then you would have to pay the charges before going through immigration.
The costs are:
Australia US$ 61
Albania US$ 30
Canada US$ 132
USA US$ 131
Mexico US$ 23
Holy Santiago de Chile
by globetrott
Holy Santiago gave the name to the city of Santiago de Chile. Holy Santiago is well known in german as Apostel Jakobus / Jacob, and exactely the same person who gave also to Santiago de Compostela in Portugal the name.
You will find the small monument for Holy Santiago on the Plaza de Armas, opposite of the cathedral, where it makes a special contrast against the mighty sky-scrapers in its backside.
Taxis and collectivos
by spidermiss
There are also taxis and collectivos available. However, please be aware of using taxis in Santiago as scams are frequent and the drivers are renowned for overcharging. You would need to be assertive and negotiate the fare before travelling! What would help is having the exact fare in change when paying. Radio taxis, however, are more reliable and safer if you're travelling alone at night. Collectivos are like taxis but go along fixed routes in the city and are somewhat cheaper.

Cajón del Maipo
by kiwigal_1
The Cajón del Maipo is a glacial valley that turns into a river valley for the Rio Maipo that heads from the Andes down into Santiago. It is a mountain paradise only about an hour's drive away from Santiago. People head up the valley to get away from the city. You can go rafting, horse trekking, hot springs, hiking, looking at rocks and rivers :) (hey I like that kind of thing!!)....
To get here it is easiest by car as this will give you more flexibility. If you haven't got a car you may consider biking up the Maipo which is a popular passtime in the area. There are also buses that go up.
