Sky Airline
by wolfbayer
I am planning to fly from Santiago, Chile to Punta Arenas. LAN Airlines charges $753 but a smaller Airline Sky Airlines only charges $211 for the least expensive option. Can this be true and can the airline be trusted? I am booking a flight for Early December of this year and wonder if that airlines will still be around.

About a year and an half ago in November I paid something just over $220 to fly from Punta Arenas to Santiago on LAN. It was part of a air pass package that included 3 or more national flights and an entrance flight to Latin American on one of the "One World" partner airlines. This national flight would have been cheaper if I had flown to South America on LAN, but I got a much much cheaper flight from Miami to Santiago on American Airlines.
I do not know anything about Sky Airlines, but I believe the price can be real. For that price difference I would be willing to take the risk. If this is not to your liking, consider that perhaps, LAN has sold off their cheaper tickets to cruise travelers or a holiday jump in travel for the days you have checked. Cheaper tickets might open up later this year. If you have not already done so, you might try a bunch of different days. Maybe even one of the last days of November.
Good luck.

With such an axtraordinary price difference between Lan and Sky, Sky would be the way to go.
Can't imagine why you would book a flight 6 months in advance.

Web site looks good, they have 13 aircraft in their fleet, mostly fly domestic but do have two International destinations, Peru and Bolivia. As for if they will be around in December, how would anyone know that? You might check with a stock broker and see if they are listed on the Chilean Stock Exchange and inquire what their financial postion is, negative or positve. Myself I would just buy the ticket.

Sky is a budget operator but has been quite reliable, so I'm pretty sure they will be around.

Hi Wolfgang,
Sky Airlines is a reliable airline and certainly cheaper than LAN on many routes. I have flown them before between Santiago and Arica and have no complaints. I was booked on them once to get to Puerto Montt but the flight was delayed a long time and so now I decided not to take them if I am flying for work purposes and need to get to a certain place at a certain time. LAN seems to be more reliable in that regard.
It is important for you to know that the flight prices that you see on LAN's website are not the cheapest ones if you are booking from overseas. LAN reserves their budget seats for tickets purchased in Chile.
Regards,
Rhianon

We've noticed several times that the LAN-prices can heavily fluctuate. We usually check a couple of times when booking a flight in Chile and in the end we always fly at a good price with them.
Travel Tips for Santiago
Smog
by IIGUANA
Smog is quite a thing in Santiago. It's shameful, and we're all trying to do something.
It's worse in winter. The dark cloud covers everything and sometimes you can't even see the Andes.
During the summer it gets down, and you can see the city more properly.

One of the most beautifull stadiums i have ever benn, you watch the game, and get to see a lovely seight of the snowed Andes on the background
A perfect (and romantic) place to spend an evening
by tommix about La Casa en el Aire
They call themselves Arte Bar and I think it’s a very appropriate definition! It’s not only a bar where you can drink and eat – it’s also an art gallery specialized in photography. Walls are always full of interesting pictures. It’s also a place where you can listen to live music. Concerts in La Casa en el Aire are every day, except Wednesdays. Live music starts at 10:30 pm (Fridays and Saturdays one hour later). Wednesday is usually dedicated to literature, with young poets and writers presenting their work.
And they are serving Paceña and Kunstmann - two brands of very good beer! And vines from famous chilean Concha y Torro and Undurraga wineyards! There is no particular dress requirements.

Best pizzas near Bellas Artes
by IIGUANA about Verace
Verace is just your regular ordinary pizza place. Nothing fancy, with the pizza makers right on the window, and some 4 to 6 tables (without counting the bar), the place is cozzy if you feel hungry. What's best about it is not the place, but the incredibly tasty pizzas. No matter what the place looks like (if you're picky), breathe, calm down, and go in. You'll be amazed. Just try any pizza. They're all so damn good. And, they're so cheap! $3.000 (around 6 US dollars), for a pizza and a soft beverage. And if you're not that hungry, you can always buy one or two slides (less than 2 dollars each).
Oh, and for dessert, do try the bitter chocolate ice-cream. The perfect end to an increadible meal.
