airport sleep over

by flyingkiwis

Hi, unfortunately we are not stopping in Santiago long enough to have a look around - we are flying through Santiago with a 7 hour stop during which some shut eye will be much needed and appreciated. We are flying into Santiago mid August at 1am, flying out again at 8am. If anyone could recommend an option somewhere very accessible to the airport which would work for this purpose we would be very grateful - prefer budget if possible, although spending a little more could be justified to save on sleep deprived crankiness.
many thanks

Options are pretty limited : there are only two hotels nearby... We stayed in both and both are OK :

The Holiday Inn is right across the airport, you just have to cross the street and you're there. (http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/sclap/hoteldetail)

And there is also the Diego de Almargo (http://www.visitchile.com/eng/valparaiso-santiago-vineyards/hotel.asp?id-hotel=SAN009). Also OK but a like bit out of the airport. The cab runs for free if you have a reservation and pass by the taxi-desk when arriving at the airport. The shuttle also brings you back for free.

Personally I like the Holiday a bit better as there is more action around the airport, but if you're there to relax than both are fine. Unfortunately both hotels know they are the only ones around you the price isn't really cheap (though not exagerated either)

Although it isn't far to a hotel in town (at that hour 20-25 mins), it might be worth spending the money on the Holiday Inn just for proximity and comfort. If it
is a national flight you need to be back in the airport at 7.
The airline lounges are not open 24 hrs. They close at about 10 pm.
I would not try to sleep in the airport. It is going to be cold in August and there aren't that many places to get comfy.

Just thought of another reason to add in favor of the airport hotel. If there are 2 of you a shared van transport will be about 10-12 US dollars each (depending on where you go) and a taxi 25-30 US. Add that to a 50 dollar hotel room and the Holiday Inn doesn't look so expensive.

I had the same problem in May going to and from Easter Island and ended up staying at the Holiday Inn at the airport because it is literally a short walk across the street and you can take the baggage trolley with you. It is expensive (US$160) and they are still doing some work fixing the damage from the earthquake but it is nice and hassle-free.

Travel Tips for Santiago

I am really in the Andes

by Skigirl

Valle Nevado- Driving up the mountains through 58 switch backs and settling at
10, 000 ft for 10 days of South American snow skiing. Valle Nevado- The people, the service is impeccable. The snow is unreal. The culture is diverse. The atmosphere surreal.

by Funreik about La Fabrica

It was one of my first dance clubs I went to and I liked it a lot. You'll find 2 floors and lot's of university students. Music is house and latin. Prices for drinks are reliable.

If I remember correctly, entrence fee was something arout 10 USD by that time. no drescode.

Liguria Restaurant

by kiwigal_1 about Liguria

Liguria has three different restaurant locations in Santiago. The atmosphere is a little different in each place and probably the Manuel Montt locale is my favourite. The service is friendly and the place is always full of people! I have ordered something different each time I came here and I would say that everything has been great!

Great bussines menu

by jpizquierdo about Amorio

This is a really good place to be in they have avery goood set lunch menu, not expensive, the place is very nice and clean, decoration very modern. If you go by night you´ll have two choices, first floor restaurant, and second floor a very warming lounge full of people and good vibes, music by a very good DJ, a very extend drink menu.
