We wish to join a tour from San Pedro to Uyuni. However, we (from Hong Kong) do not have Bolivia visa. Does anyone have experience in obtaining the visa in Calama, San Pedro or the frontier between Chile and Bolivia? Is it easy to get it? How long will it take?
By the way, one of us holds United Kingdom passport. Does the passport holder require visa to enter into Bolivia?
All advice/comment are highly appreciated in advance.
U K passport holders do not require a visa, however if you are a USA citizen it is require (we pissed them off with the cocca) Regardless it is simple to get if you need one, bring the necessary photographs along with your passport to the embassey if you think you need one. , I don't know where you are coming from. Cheers Tommy x
UK passport holders do require a visa if the stay is longer than 30 days + a 60 day extension obtained whilst in the country. Look here for info:

I cannot find an official website for the Bolivian Embassy in the UK.

I was quite lucky to receive some rain in the driest spot on earth. Before coming to SP I was told something of 53 years without rain and the like. I don?t know if it was the colleague at work who was always terribly exaggerating or some more trustworthy source, but anyhow ? it was getting close to a miracle! We were cut off for 2 days as the one and only connecting road was flooded ? as well as the dirt roads within ?downtown? as you can see here on this pic.
This tour is offered by one of the several tourist agencies in San pedro , "southamerican adventure" invites you to live an unforgettable experience enjoying the pleasures of mountainbiking in the beautiful landscapes of the Andes Mountain Range. Adapted for everybody, this tour can be from two hours to many days. The quiet rhythm of mountain biking, allows us to enjoy the landscapes, the fauna, the flora.
You can cross Dunes, rivers, archaeological sites or realize decreases in ways of mountain.
If you ever wondered how Earth looked like in prehistoric times, before massive life forms appeared on the surface of the planet, here’s the answer: it was like El Tatio ("weeping old man" in Kunza tongue) geothermal field.
This is a timeless landscape of geysers, fumaroles, mineral sources and strange geological shapes, all of them together in a flat white area of salt and carbonate, surrounded by two volcanoes (the Tatio and the Linzor) and a criscross of streams, both hot and cold, mineral and fresh, that flow from the volcanoes to a ravine in its southern end.
When the tour groups leave after dawn, and nobody remains there, the only sounds are those of the geysers spurting boiling water and steam, sometimes making beast-like sounds when they “swallow” its own water, and nothing else: just those strange sounds from the Earth that are always present, wind and solitude.
Sometimes, there are other sounds too: the “chirping” of the wild vicuñas (an Andean camelid) that roam in packs around the place, fearless of humans, or the beating of the wings of the small colony of pink flamingos at the NE end of the salt flat.
Most people visit the geysers on tours operated from San Pedro, a wise choice as the peak of the steam plumes is reached before and around the sunrise, when the difference of temperature between the cold air (at dawn, it can be as low as –20ºC/-4ºF or less) and the boiling water or steam which, due to the altitude, boils at only 86ºC/187ºF.

Since there’s no dedicated page on VT for this out-of-this-world place, I’ll spread the information on it, on the appropriate sections on San Pedro de Atacama, identifying them as “TATIO”.

On the east side of town you find the little cemetery of San Pedro. It is not as impressive as other Chilean cemeteries, but it has its own magic in it?s simplicity, peace and surroundings ? the city ends here and you look to the majestic Andean mountains. I was captured by a special feeling, this mix of respect for the dead lying around me and respect for the greatness of nature around.
