Suggestions on Chile
I have 5 days in Chile to spend chilling out in march 2006. Looking at going up to La Serena for a few days and visiting Vina and Valpo.
I am quite keen to hire a car and take things as they come. Would this be feasible in March to get accommodation? Bearing in mind my spanish is very very basic....
Any help would be appreciated
RE: Suggestions on Chile
If you can choose, try to stay in Viña Del Mar, it's much more relaxed and enjoyable than Valparaiso, at least for staying, Valparaiso is a wonderful town to walk around though. It's quiet easy to find accommodation in Viña too, we stayed last October in Hotel Andalue, (http://www.hotelandalue.cl/index.html) close to the Casino and only a few minutes from the beach and on the boarder with Valparaiso.
Enjoy your trip !
Travel Tips for La Serena
Cruz del Tercer Milenio - Coquimbo
Sitting up on the hill overlooking Coquimbo Port (the city adjoining La Serena) is the Cruz del Tercer Milenio, which is a huge cross that was built to commemorate the birth of Christ and the dawn of the new century. It is 83 metres high and situated on the highest hill in the city - called El Vigía, which is 157.3 metres high.
The Cross has a look out with a view over the bays of Coquimbo and La Herradura.
Talking with local elderly people :o)
I think that one of the best ways to get to know better a place is by talking with local people, they know a lot about the city, traditions etc. I love to talk with local elderly people.....they know so much about this city!, most of the ones I've talked to so far, have lived all their life here, can you imagine all the stories they have to tell???.
They are like alive monuments! :o)
La Serena's Cathedral
This Neoclasic Cathedral was built in 1844 by the French Architect D. Juan de Herbage.
It was declared a National Monument in 1981.
It's located in Los Carrera with Cordovez, nearby the main public square.
LET'S TASTE SOME GOOD CHILEAN WINES!!!!!
This is the Vineyard Casa Tamaya. Tamaya in Diaguitas language (the indians who lived in the Limari area) means "High place from where you can watch it all".
This Vineyard is located 2 hours to the SE of La Serena, on the road to Ovalle.
Casa Tamaya has 220 hectares from which 180 are planted and in production.
This Vineyard started in 1997 and it's main stubs are: Chardonnay, Viognier and Sauvignon Blanc (white grapes); Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Carmènére, Syrah and Sangiovese (red grapes).
During 2001 they started the construction of the storeroom (1.470.000 liters).
Visit Capel Pisco Plant
CAPEL is the major Pisco Company in Chile. It was born in 1934.
Alto del Carmen, Artesanos del Cochiguaz and Valle del Limari brands belong to Capel, as well as Pisco Capel, it's emblematic brand.
The Capel Plant, located in Vicuna, offers guided tours in Spanish and English, every 30 minutes. Here you can know more about the Pisco elaboration processes, from the grapes selection till the storing in American Oak barrels.
After the tour you can taste different types of Pisco....cheers! :o)
