Bus from Bariloche

by janetlee

Can anyone advise me on which bus company provides the transporation from Bariloche to Osorno? How long will it take? We only have 2 days to stay in Chile and are thinking whether we should go to Osorno or Puerto Montt. Can anyone give me some recommendations? Thanks.

Several companies do the trip, often using partner companies: Via Bariloche/Don Otto, Bus Norte, El Valle etc. There is not much difference between them. It takes about 5 hours but it depends on delays at customs and these can be very long in summer. Neither Osorno nor P. Montt are good choices. Puerto Varas, Frutillar or one of the other towns on the lakes are a better choice.

Thanks for your information.

You can go by bus crossing the Andes of course, but it' s better to make the cross of lakes with Andina del Sur from Bariloche to Puerto Montt in a day, or stay in Petrohue next to Osorno volcan as I did; see my South America transportation tips:

Thanks Heloisa.

I would love to do the lake crossing. However, I will be going to Bariloche in end of April next year and understand that the lake crossing service is not available during that time of the year. So, I can take the land route only.

The Cruce Andino is available all year. But it is a one day trip in summer and you overnight in Peulla at other times of year. There are only two hotels to choose from and neither is cheap, but if the cost is not a problem, then you can do it. The cost, however, has risen every year and it is not a cheap trip. Rain in April is more likely than not.

The bus goes through national parks on both sides of the border and has some lovely scenery. You can actually reproduce some of the lake crossing cruise in spring/summer by taking a day trip to Peulla on the Chilean side and later a boat trip from Pueto Pañuelo on the Bariloche side when you are there, as both the beginning and end of the expensive lake crossing are on public excursion boats.

Travel Tips for Osorno

Tipping

by kiwigal_1

In Chile the standard tip in a restaurant is 10% which is sometimes added onto the bill but more often than not you need to leave behind on the table. If paying by credit card you can ask to add the tip to the bill and indicate the standard 10%.

Do not tip taxis.

If you drive a car in Chile, then there are places where you can park for free but there may be a man or woman "helping" you to park (such as near the plaza de armas in Osorno). This person works for tips. They can wash your car while you are away usually also. The tip you pay them should be anything from 200 pesos or more depending on the length of time you stay. I usually pay around 500 pesos.

In supermarkets the people who pack your bags only work for tips. They are not paid by the supermarket. Depending on the amount of groceries you could tip anything from 50 cents up to around 500 pesos. The 10% rule is not hard and fast here, just whatever loose change you have.

Osorno - Lakes, Volcanoes and Dairy Farms!

by kiwigal_1

"Osorno Volcano"

I travel to Osorno for work quite often to check out dairy farms in the region! (I kid you not!!) The region is known for its lakes and volcanoes. Being volcano mad I was pretty excited however my dreams of smoking volcanoes were soon dashed because the whole time I was in Osorno on my first visit it was foggy and raining :(

Eventually I was lucky to see the volcanos, proof in these photographs.

"Osorno - dairy farming capital of Chile"

Coming from New Zealand it is quite interesting to visit Osorno and see how similar it is to the dairy farming countryside in parts of my country.

"Stunning volcanoes"

I have been back to Osorno a few times now and have seen the volcano.
