A wonderful day in Puerto Montt

by jianliu

We are taking a cruise to South America in end Dec. The first stop is at Puerto Montt. Instead of joining the Shore Excursion program offered by the cruise line, we would like travel on our own for greater flexibility and seeing more. From 8:00- 17:00, is it possible to tour around Frutillar and Puerto Varas on our own by local transport?

Hi
I suggest you contact our resident VTer patagoniapaul, who lives in Puerto Montt. Have a look at his Puerto Montt travel pages and then perhaps contact him for his suggestions if you have any furtehr queries.
I don't see him on line as often these days, so to be safe, perhaps contact him via VT email and also the other website that he lists on his home page.
Enjoy!
Regards
Cathy

8:00- 17:00 is one point and another one is the size of your ship. large ships have to anchor off the port and the tenderservice takes a really long timeand might cut 1-2hours from that time 8:00- 17:00.
What I remember from my stay in Puerto Montt : there are lots of taxidrivers at the port and they have photos of the various tours they offer at a pre-fixed price.
Public local transport -I dont know !

Yes, I agree!

Port time does not equal time ashore!

Remember too that if you miss the due-back time, the ship may sail without you!

So, do use a taxi but play it safe!
Also, negotiate the fare beforehand!

Which cruise line are you going with?

There are public buses to Frutillar and Puerto Varas. It was easy to get there in the given time frame.

I cannot remember anymore how long it took to go there by bus but it should not take longer than 1 to 1.5 hours to Frutillar. Puerto Varas is only 27 km north of Puerto Montt, on the way to Frutillar, and it takes clearly less than 1 hour to get there by public bus.

Even if you have to make sure not to miss the tender to the cruise ship you should not have a problem at all to visit these two places.

Travel Tips for Puerto Montt

Travel Agencies

There are several travel agencies inside the bus station of P. Montt...they are not expensive and they offer some very nice trips, like the ones to Lagoa Todos los Santos, hiking over the Osorno, or Calbuco etc....

Black Forrest architecture in Puerto Montt

by globetrott

Many of the german settlers of 1852 had been from the Black Forest and so it is no wonder that you will see a lot of buildings reminding you of the special architecture there. On my main picture you will see such a building with a roof made in "Schwarzwald-style" and on my last picture you will see a wooden facade, made of wooden tyles, also made in a way that you will see it at many places in BlackForest.

Walk to a waterfall

by patagoniapaul

The Rio Blanco waterfall is a nice 20 minute walk for the ones that want to experience the outdoors but are not looking for a strenuous hike. Just the drive out there is worth the effort! There are stunning views of volcano Calbuco as one gets closer.

Downtown Puerto Montt

by globetrott

Downtown Purto Montt is a strange mixture of modern shoping-centres and a few remains of the old architecture of the early, mostly german settlers. Except for the cathedral and maybe the old steam-locomotives there are no really interesting places to see there and I would rather recommend to take a tour to the volcanos or the National Parks, when you come to Puerto Montt by cruiseship.

PM a/to PN X I- Glaciar Pio XI

by elpariente

In the third day evening , we reached the Pio XI Glacier , that is the biggest glacier in the South Hemisphere , really big of 6 kms wide and high that reaches 75 meters with a length of 64 kms
You can imagine the ice floes and the waves when the big masses of ice fall down from the glacier
We had rain and water , the "next" time we hope to have better weather
