Private Tour for our group

by titaade

Hello,
Can anyone please tell me if it is easy to book a minivan for a private day tour of P.Montt/P. Varas once we get to the port or should we book in advance? And if we must book ahead of time, any recommendations for tour guide/agencies? Our cruise ship will be there on Dec.20,2007 and will be tendered from 8:00AM-5:00PM. Any tips for a day itineraries of "must see"? Thank you very much.
Lena

yes, it's easy, we've made this way in a cruise some years ago; as we've already known the area we didn't book the ship excursion and joined one at the port; my suggestion is to go to Petrohue, to see Osorno Volcan and Petrohue falls; they make a short stop in Puerto Varas.

Petrohue is very nice, this is a photo: http://www.eyecyou.net/patagonline/index.php?galeria=Petrohue
Puerto Vara, it is a small, clean city, of many flowers and colors, surrounded for the lake Llanquihue This near Puerto Montt, to about 20 minutes ,Volcan Osorno and Petrohue are more far , about 45 minutes . Try with www.enaturchile.com , they specialize in private trips

Travel Tips for Puerto Montt

Picoroco

by elpariente

No voy a decir nada que no haya dicho Neruda
El picoroco encarcelado
está en una torre terrible,
saca una garra azul, palpita
desesperado en el tormento.
Es tierno adentro de su torre:
blanco como harina de mar
pero nadie alcanza el secreto
de su frío castillo gótico.
Pablo Neruda, Maremoto (1968)
I am not saying anything that Neruda didn´t say before
(It is very hard translate a Neruda poem , I am sorry)
The picoroco jailed
is in a terrible tower,
shows a terrible claw , beat
desperated in the torture
It is tender inside its tower:
white like the sea flower
but nobody reaches the secret
of its cold Gothic castle
Pablo Neruda, Maremoto (1968)

Hat-island

by globetrott

This giant "hat" is in a distance of about 3 hours by cruiseship on your way to the south from Puerto Montt. It is a pity that we did not get any closer because it looked quite interesting with a mountain in the shape of a giant hat and a long and narrow beach next to it - just click on my other photographs to enlarge them and see these funny details !

Angelmo

This part of the city is very interesting..located amongst the piers, it has a great market of seafood (huuuuuuge "monster" oisters!!!! centollas...) and all sorts of things...it has, as well, a market of craftwork called Feria Artesanal. They are open everyday. All you have to do is to walk along the avenue that contours the bay or take a cab...it´s a very known place. There are some restaurants as well. When you arrive in Puerto Montt, ask someone about the time the market closes....At night it´s not a good idea to get there on foot since the avenue near algelmo gets completely empty and very dark.

the old village of Puerto Montt

by globetrott

This suburb of Puerto Montt is not far away from the port-area, some side-streets with interesting old architecture dating back to the time of the early settlers from Germany. It was interesting to walk there a bit, I never felt unsecure and the few local people that we met were also very friendly.

Enjoy leaving this town - Sympa de partir d'ici !

An overview of our departure place (our trip in Cargo, remember ?)...
Puerto Montt is not very attracting but it's the departure place for the Navimag boats ...

Une vue du dessus du point de depart de notre voyage en cargo...
Puerto Montt n'est pas attirante en soi, mais c'est d'ici que partent les bateaux Navimag, alors...
