SALITRERA HUMBERSTONE

Fue establecida en 1872 por la Peruvian Nitrate Company con el nombre de La Palma, en conmemoración de la batalla librada en la localidad del mismo nombre, cerca de Lima en 1855.

Pasó por diferentes dueños, hasta que en 1932, bajo el poder de la Compañía Gibbs sufrió la primera paralización de sus actividades. Luego fue adquirida por la Compañía Salitrera de Tarapacá y Antofagasta (COSATAN), siendo sometida el año 1934 a una reestructuración y rebautizada con su nombre actual en recuerdo al "padre del salitre". Ese año se construyó el campamento y posteriormente la iglesia, el mercado, el hotel, el teatro, el hospital, la escuela, la piscina y las casas para los jefes, empleados y obreros.

El 17 de enero de 2002, Humberstone, junto a la oficina salitrera Santa Laura, fue adjudicada por la Corporación del Museo del Salitre, entidad que pretende instituir en ambos lugares un museo abierto destinado al recuerdo y preservación de los vestigios de nuestro pasado salitrero.

The city, is located in the north part of Chile, in the first region, called Tarapaca Region.
Chile have 12 regions plus the Metropolitan Area called Santiago (is the capitalof the country).
Iquique is 1853km north of Santiago and 315km south of Arica, the west side of the Pacific ocen and the desolate brown coastal range rising abruptly behind it.

Iquique is one of the most interesting spots in Northern Chile. It is a city with a long and rich culture and history. But in addition, it is surrounded by natural beauty on all sides. La Cavancha is the best known beach area and offers a wide sandy area and warmer waters than found in most parts of the Chilean Pacific.To the East of the city are innumerable nature spots in the Atacama Desert. The city also boasts excellent hotels, restaurants and a casino. The prices at even the most expensive hotels are very reasonable.
