Anyone travelling from Santiago to Valparaiso on April 11, 2009?

by StuinPenticton

My wife and I are arriving on an Air Canada flight from Toronto to Santiago on April 11, 2009. We start a cruise the next day, leaving from Valparaiso. Is anyone else on the same itinerary, and what options are you considering to get from the airport in Santiago to Valparaiso?

Hi, I am not travelling on that cruise but I do live in Valparaíso. You have several options: when you arrive in Santiago, at the arrival gate, you can book private transport either to the hotel in Santiago or to a hotel in Valparaiso (there are a number of desks located just when you pass customs). Prices for a taxi to Valparaiso are around 10O US dollars. You can stay in Santiago the day you arrive, but i would advise you to enjoy the opportunity to get to know the beautiful town of Valparaiso. There are lots of lodging options in Valparaiso, the classier hotels are Casa Higueras (www.casahigueras.cl)or Hotel Zero (zerohotel.com). They have English websites and are very helpful. If you book a room in Valparaiso, they can arrange transport from the airport (it is only 1,5 hour from the airport to Valparaiso). To get to your cruiseship on the 11th, your hotel can arrange a taxi for around 15 US to drop you off at the passengers terminal in Valparaiso.
I hope this helps you, if you would like to know about cheaper lodging options in Valparaiso, let me know

Travel Tips for Valparaíso

The hills of Valparaíso

by Bjorgvin

Explore some of the hills (cerros) of Valparaíso (to name a few: Cerro Concepcion, Cerro Alegre, and Cerro Santo Domingo). Use the wooden trams or ascensores to reach the upper city. The hills are an impressive mix of colourful houses built by immigrant merchants, dating back to the early 1900s, winding streets, narrow alleys and steep stairways. Many Europeans made Valparaíso their second home in its heyday. The vast majority were English and German and they built houses influenced by European architecture.

Colo Colo..El Indio

by marsistanbul

Former club Magallanes players led by Arellano brothers, created their new club Colo Colo on April 1925,naming the club for a Chilean Mapuche chief(Colo Colo was a Mapuche leader,he held the position of Peace Leader, but took ever strategic duties when Spanish conquest began, becoming the head of the Native Mapuche forces againist invaders)
Colo Colo's nicknames El Indio(the Indian) or El eterno Campeon(the Eternal champion),and I believe that El Indio is one of the fantastic football club in Chile, and have the craziest( the DIEHARD) fans, because I am the one of them:) And I had a chance to watch of their last championship match,sure..We're the CHAMPION of 2007..
Saludos El Indio,saludos muchacos

Consulado de França / the French Consulate

by globetrott

Consulado de França / The French Consulate is one of my favorite buildings along Av. Brasil. You will find it at a place in a distance of about 1 km from Plaza Sotomayor, a building with an interesting architecture, lovely balconies, columns and even a few palmtrees in front of it. Even more interesting than the French Consulate are the 2 other buildings in the same block : see my next tip for these lovely Art-Nouveau-buildings !

Well the area is plenty of restaurants. But in this long time since I started to write in VT I haven´t gone any.

But, I strongly recomend eat the sweet and great BERLINES, in this place aside Plaza Victoria. The best berlines in the world.

Cara a cara con - Neruda - Face to face

by elpariente

On of the three Neruda houses , where he celebrated the New Year to see the Valparaiso fireworks
The house and the gardens , with spectacular views , are very nice , full of memories , poems ,books , a wooden horse and also a bar with marine atmosphere
Neruda dedicated to the Sebastiana this poem : "T built the house . I did it first with air . Then I Lifted the flag in the air and I left it hanging from the sky , from the star , from the light and from the darkness
