Bus travel to the international airport

by fishcanjoy

We would like to travel from Valparaiso (post-cruise) to Santiago SCL Internatonal Terminal by bus in January 2010.I understand that Tur Bus and Pullman are the operators, but, the information that I have found is Santiago to Valparaiso routes, not Valparaiso to Santiago. Any help would be appreciated. Thankyou.

hi,
I did myself and it's easier (and faster 'n cheaper) from Valparaiso to airport then viceversa.
Any bus from Vaparaiso (and Viña del Mar) to Santiago town, can stop close to Santiago airport, close it does not mean at. There are always taxi awaiting there, very quickly you'll be at airport without going to Santiago town first.
At least, if it will be heavy raining, no taxi are awaiting, you could go straight to terminal and then take a taxi from there.. not differences on ticket's fare, by the one final destination to terminal and tell the driver you've to go to airport.

I hope you have scheduled some time for Valparaiso and Santiago. To travel so far and then miss these cities would be a shame.

If you do have to go immediately to the airport, bus is a good option. Unless something has changed in the last year, I do not think that there are any buses that go directly to the airport. You have to take a bus to the Pajaritos bus station in Santiago and pick up the airport express from there. There are frequent departures from both Valparaiso and from Pajaritos. This would be inexpensive relative to any taxi or van method, plus efficient and easy.

You will probably want to take a taxi to get from your cruise ship to the bus station in Valparaiso. It is not beyond being walkable and there are city buses, but with luggage a taxi makes sense. Try not to agree to overpay the taxi.

good luck. bob

Melosh is correct. Buses and taxis leave from Pajaritos metro station for the airport. Buses to Santiago will stop there. The assistant on the bus from Valparaíso may ask you where you are getting off. pa-ha-ree-toes
Linea Azul also does the route.

The bus ticket to the bus terminal in Santiago or to Pajaritos metro station on the outskirts costs exactly the same. You simply indicate that you want to get off at Pajaritos.

Travel Tips for Valparaíso

Entre el puerto, el mar y los...

by fga

Congreso Nacional

Pablo Neruda and the Postman

by Bjorgvin

The film Il Postino (1994) is a small gem from director Michael Radford (starring Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi, Mara Grazia Cucinotta, Linda Moretti). Here is a rough summary of the story: Pablo Neruda lives in exile on a small Italian island. Because of the huge increase in mail that this causes a poor fisherman is hired as an extra postman. Il Postino is to hand-deliver the mail to Neruda. This poorly educated man learns to love poetry and eventually befriends Neruda. Then he suddenly falls in love and needs Neruda's help and guidance more than ever ...

If you're short of time i.e. only one day, you can go there on a day trip from Santiago. Buses leave frequently all day between Santiago and Valparaiso. In Santiago, the bus station is located at the metro station Universidad de Santiago. The journey is between 1 1/2hrs and 2hrs and is inexpensive. The company 'Tur Bus' is recommendable. Just leave early in the morning to maximize your time there.
Once in Valparaiso, there are many local buses that run between Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. Viña is a more modern touristic town directly north (and connected with) Valparaiso. Many people from Santiago go there for summer vacations. There's nothing really special about Viña. If you're short on time, stay in Valparaiso.

Monument to the Heroes of Iquique

by iwys

Underneath the monument lie the remains of Chile’s naval heroes, including Arturo Prat, who lost their lives fighting the Peruvian Navy in the Battle of Iquique.

This battle took place on May 21, 1879. The Chilean navy fought against combined Peruvian-Bolivian forces. Prat, who captained the Esmeralda, was killed after boarding the Peruvian ship Huáscar. His heroism is said to have inspired the nation to their eventual victory.
