Congreso Nacional
Pablo Neruda and the Postman
by Bjorgvin
The film Il Postino (1994) is a small gem from director Michael Radford (starring Philippe Noiret, Massimo Troisi, Mara Grazia Cucinotta, Linda Moretti). Here is a rough summary of the story: Pablo Neruda lives in exile on a small Italian island. Because of the huge increase in mail that this causes a poor fisherman is hired as an extra postman. Il Postino is to hand-deliver the mail to Neruda. This poorly educated man learns to love poetry and eventually befriends Neruda. Then he suddenly falls in love and needs Neruda's help and guidance more than ever ...

If you're short of time i.e. only one day, you can go there on a day trip from Santiago. Buses leave frequently all day between Santiago and Valparaiso. In Santiago, the bus station is located at the metro station Universidad de Santiago. The journey is between 1 1/2hrs and 2hrs and is inexpensive. The company 'Tur Bus' is recommendable. Just leave early in the morning to maximize your time there.
Once in Valparaiso, there are many local buses that run between Valparaiso and Viña del Mar. Viña is a more modern touristic town directly north (and connected with) Valparaiso. Many people from Santiago go there for summer vacations. There's nothing really special about Viña. If you're short on time, stay in Valparaiso.
Monument to the Heroes of Iquique
by iwys
Underneath the monument lie the remains of Chile’s naval heroes, including Arturo Prat, who lost their lives fighting the Peruvian Navy in the Battle of Iquique.
This battle took place on May 21, 1879. The Chilean navy fought against combined Peruvian-Bolivian forces. Prat, who captained the Esmeralda, was killed after boarding the Peruvian ship Huáscar. His heroism is said to have inspired the nation to their eventual victory.
