TAXI COST: Valparaiso to Santiago??

by Amanda&Jens

Good day all,
Can anyone give me a an approximate taxi fare cost from Valparaiso to Santiago? Our hotel wants to charge us $150 one way....I'm thinking this may be high and a taxi cheaper?
Many thanks and have a great day, Amanda

That's high. Santiago to Valparaiso is a fixed US$100 with the airport official taxis and fares are usually slightly less from Valpo to Santiago.

Someone posted this previously:
That's US$82.66 at today's exchange. i don't know that I would use online payment but you could call them when you are in Valpo.

Travel Tips for Valparaíso

by kiwigal_1

In Chile the standard tip in a restaurant is 10% which is sometimes added onto the bill but more often than not you need to leave behind on the table. If paying by credit card you can ask to add the tip to the bill and indicate the standard 10%.

Do not tip taxis.

If you drive a car in Chile, in particular Santiago then there are places where you can park for free but there may be a man or woman "helping" you to park. This person works for tips. They can wash your car while you are away usually also. The tip you pay them should be anything from 200 pesos or more depending on the length of time you stay. I usually pay around 500 pesos.

In supermarkets the people who pack your bags only work for tips. They are not paid by the supermarket. Depending on the amount of groceries you could tip anything from 50 cents up to around 500 pesos. The 10% rule is not hard and fast here, just whatever loose change you have.

You can get lost in Valparaiso's hill with a blink of an eye. If you ever get lost, just remember to go down the hill. You'll always get to the bottom of the city somehow, where downtown is. There are buses all over the place there.
Anyhow, if you need a city map, there's one at the port where you can find the tourist information centre and all the local buildings that are worth the visit.

Visit The Waterfront

by VeronicaG

We traveled to Valparaiso with our son's family. The seaport was busy and crowded on the day we came. Small shops lined the waterfront selling all types of merchandise such postcards, leather crafts, small toys and souvenirs.

The sounds and smells of the busy seaport indicated a thriving seaport. Valparaiso is regaining some of its former glory days with its fruit exports, seafood and other contributions to world commerce. Tourism figures greatly in its contribution to the economy.

The Bohemian Valparaiso

One good example of the government's will to make Valparaiso The Arty place in Chile is the project "Ex-Carcel". Since year 2000, the old jail has been transformed in a art center and the 1350 prisoners have been replaced by paintings, sculptures, theatre, concerts...

Around 50 artists are currently involved in the project. Ask for Papito, an ex-10-year-prisoner who is now in charge of guiding visitors and who is also busy writing a book on jail jargon. The Ex-Carcel is open to public on saturdays and sundays only!

This picture has been taken from the outside wall of the Ex-Carcel and represents a view from the inside.
If you like wall paintings, you'll be happy to find many in Valparaiso, especially in Cerros Alegre and Concepción, and also in an area called "museo a cielo abierto" (on the east side of Subida Ecuador - cerro Florida)
