My husband and I arrive by cruise ship in January 2010 and would like to look around Valparaiso before travelling to the airport. Is there anywhere we can leave our luggage before catching the bus?
How often do the buses run and how long does it take to get to the airport? Also do you have to pre-book or just turn up and buy a ticket?
You can store luggage in the bus station at the "custodia". I would not recommend this if you have a lot of luggage as you need to keep a close watch on it in bus stations. There are no porters or trolleys.
The buses leave every 15 mins or so and you should be able to just get a ticket when you store the luggage, unless it is the end of a long weekend. It takes about an hour and a half to Pajaritos metro station (All buses will stop there if requested. You need to indicate you want to get off there and not go all the way into town to the bus station). From Pajaritos you can get an airport bus, they leave every 20-30 minutes, or a taxi to the airport which is a further 20-30 minutes away.
Visit Viña del Mar, the country’s premier beach resort 10km north of Valparaíso. It is sometimes called the Garden City. Take a stroll on the white-sand beaches or soak in the sun. The city has many parks and interesting museums housed in restored mansions.
The Mapuche are the largest indigenous group remaining in Chile.The exact size of the population is unknown,but it is estimated that it numbers roughly a million,distributed in two district areas;one,those that live in rural and urban areas between the eighth and tenth regions,the largest number being in the ninth region;and those -growing in number-who live almost exclusively in Santiago,the capital of the country.In addition there is a significant group of around seventy thousand Mapuche living in the south of Argentina.

These 'buses' are actually cars, that go back and forth up and down the steep hills. There are plenty of places to wait for them at the bottom of the hills.
Just stand near the sign for your destination, and be prepared to share the ride with 2 or 3 other people.
The port--Chile's largest--is the center of Valparaíso's life, and you can't miss a visit to it. Valpo has been a center of Pacific commercial traffic for more than two centuries, handling everything from wheat to wine to copper.
