Can I survive in vina del mar for a few days without knowing any spanish?
You will be able to get by. English is not widely spoken in Chile, but people will try to understand you and help.
it not rare to find someone speaking in English in Viña del Mar
Let me put it like this... Been there 3 times, my Spanish is at a 3 year old kid's level and I didn't have any real problems.
As a rule I can say one word sentences, with an occasional two word.
There are enough people who speak enough English to make it fairly easy to do most anything you want.
The worse case I had, was wanting to return to a particular restaurant I had visited before. The cab driver understood I wanted to eat but couldn't understand my directions... so he simply pulled the cab over, told me to "wait" and asked several people on sidewalk who spoke 'English'. By the third person he had a translator for us, only to discover the restaurant had closed.
My biggest suggestion is to carry your hotel's name, address & phone number with you. Think of it as a "If lost return to".
Have fun.
You can but you always get more out of travelling it you take a lanmguage course beforehand. www.cactuslanguage.com do language courses in Santiago de and Pucon as well as other places in S America. I took one of their courses in Costa Rica and it was great!

Vina del Mar boasts that it is Chile's most luxurious beach resort town, attracting visitors from all over the world. Even though it was off season...it was quite lovely to take walks on the beautiful white sand beach .
In November though it is very quite....summer doesn't start until December and then the whole landsape changes when the peope role in.
This small lagoon is the only one there is in Vina del Mar. It's has some nice walking trails and the view is quite nice.
The lagoon itself has a small beach, but I wouldn't recomend taking a bath. It was polluted some years ago. I don't know if they cleaned it up.
Try going during the day. It's not very safe during the night.
Maybe this won't make the usual "Must See Activities" on any tourist guide, but it's a house worth taking a peek.
Actually this house is made from the rock itself where it stands on, and its quite amazing how the rock was carved to make the house. I like to stop over and watch it, imaging it how it would be on the inside. It's current owner's won't probably let you go inside, but you'll be able to take some pics of it. If you're interested of course.
I really enjoyed my time here and met lots of great people.
Highly recommended but not so cheap for the budget backpacker.
If you are from north of the equator then it is a great winter escape haven!
Pics forthcoming!
