Hotel Eupacla: In the city center
Wery friendly and helpful staff. No airconditions (none needed) but a fan i the roof. Not a wery exiting breakfast but a lot of good alternatives close by. 3 nightclubs just around the corner. Noisy room especially from buses passing by early in the morning. Clean rooms. Safety deposit boxes and Lavenderia.
All in all a simple but good city center Hotel with good value for money. Ask for special price if you are staying for a long time.

Hotel Plazuela Nutibara ("Residencias"): Budget accomodation with amenities of the hotel
This is the "annex" to the Hotel Nutibara, just across from it. Rooms are much cheaper, around € 24 per single room per night including buffet breakfast in the main hotel and includes the use of all amenities of the main Hotel Nutibara such as swimming pool, sauna, restaurant, bar etc.
The only difference is that the rooms don't have airconditioning but have a fan and there is no stocked mini-bar in the fridge and no safe deposit box in the room but the reception has safety deposit boxes which can be requested for at no extra charge.
I stayed here for a week and I was very satisfied.
Info February 2011.
Unique Quality: Economical, comfortable and conveniently located.

Hotel Nutibara: Good, comfortable and not expensive
A large, stately, traditional hotel, breathing the colonial atmosphere. Lots of wood and "antiques". Smack in the middle of the center of Medellin.
Rooms spacious and comfortable. Rates around € 35-45 per room per night. Buffet breakfast included. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner as well for a reasonable price, around € 5-7 for a meal with a drink. Swimming pool on the 3rd floor. Very friendly staff.
Across from the hotel are the "residencias" of the hotel ("Plazuela Nutibara"); these rooms cost half the price of the hotel rooms but all amenities of the "main" hotel can be used.
Internet cafés around the corner.
The area behind the hotel is not very safe at night though. But in front of the hotel, on the Plaza, no problems but take normal precautions.
Taxis to/from the Rio Negro airport around € 20. At the airport just take any taxi that is parked in front of the terminal. Perfectly safe. Travel time approx. 45 minutes to 1 hour.
Behind the hotel is the mini-bus stop to Rionegro airport, leave every 20 minutes, takes also about 1 hour, costs € 3.

Hotel Capitolio
There are many hostels for travellers in Medellín , but they are not located down town (but in more modern neighbourhoods like Poblado). I wanted to stay down town and I also thought a hotel there would be more quiet then some of the hostels could be (many backpackers come to Medellín to party).
I got a small quiet room. It was clean with a bed, a table, a fridge, a TV (with lots of channels), a fan and a bathroom. The room was 50 000 pesos a night (July 2008). By the reception there is a small restaurant. One morning I had breakfast there, egg (which tasted of ketchup) , bread and juice was 4500 pesos. In the reception there is free coffee.
Hotel Capitol is situated behind the Cathedral and opposite there is a small shopping centre. The area doesn’t feel safe to walk around in after dark, so I only crossed the road from the Internet café in the shopping centre after dark.
It is a short walk from the hotel to the metro.

PALM TREE HOSTAL: MEDELLIN
Pros:
- Great hostel!! Located in the residential area, hence, is very tranquil and feels safe and the hostel is quiet new
- Within walking distance from Suramericana metro station
- Right opposite a gigantic EXITO supermarket, very convenient
- Splendid kitchen and dining area, free orange juice (squeeze them yourself)!
- Other relaxing places like hammock and a large TV room with tonnes of DVDs selection
- Dorms are comfortable and clean
- Quite secure with some form of 'control' to enter the hostel
Cons:
- Hmmmm... maybe, number of toilets are not that adequate but it is quite fine
Dorms: 13,000 Colombian pesos (2005)

Hotel Dann Carlton Medellin: Comfortable hotel in Medellin
Comfortable hotel in Medellin in the El Poblado neighbourhood. Within walking distance of Parque Lleras, one of the "zona rosa's" of Medellin with many bars, restaurants and discotecas. Safe to walk, even late at night. Rooms comfortable with complete bathroom, nice restaurants and swimming pool. Around 70-80 Euros per night per room. I made my reservation through expedia and all went well.
There is another Dann Carlton hotel called The Belfort, which seems to be a little less expensive, also in the El Poblado neighbourhood but not within walking distance of the Parque Lleras.
Taxi from/to airport Rionegro takes 45 min-1 hour, 18 Euros (fixed price). Recommended.

Intercontenental Medellin: An Intercontinental in name
I love the Intercontinental line of Hotels but for some reason the ones in Colombia really show their age. In both Medellin and in Bogota I have found them to be good hotels but not the extremely high end hotels I have found elsewhere. That said it is a good place to stay with a pool and a nice outdoor resturant with a Spanish theme.
It is also on Las Palmas near many of the good resturant and night clubs.
