Hotel Casa Real: another option up the street

Since Hotel Imperial was less than perfect, I checked a very nice looking place just up the street from it called Hotel Casa Real. I was drawn in by its colorful courtyard and asked to see one of their rooms. The room must have been three times the size of the one we were huddling in and very nicely furnished with a modern bathroom. It was an older building but converted overly nicely so it had high ceilings and much more character. But all this came with a price and it was 60,000 COP ($30) per night which was out of our budget especially after splurging on a great room in Villa de Leyva. But for those not on such a strict budget, it seemed a great place to stay with an excellent location to the bus terminal and main square.

Hotel Imperial: the order effect

Suffering from a bit of an order effect, Hotel Imperial was a very serviceable place that just happened to pale in comparison to the just previous splurge place we stayed in Villa de Leyva. That said, it was a clean and modern place with a nice bright interior common area that helped make up for our rather small room. The shower was, however, hot and the price right: 30,000 COP ($15) per night.

It is quite close to the main square and between it and the bus terminal, making it perfect for a short overnight visit which for us turned into three nights since we enjoyed the town and its great food scene so much.

Hotel Hunza: Big city comforts in a beautiful town

One of the area's few high-rise locations, Hotel Hunza is a relatively up-to-date offering in the center of Tunja. There are beautiful views of the town and the surrounding area from the upper floors, and the location is ideal for a stroll around town or even seeing some of Tunja's nightlife. An excellent breakfast was included. While Tunja is a charming town, ironically the staff did not have much information about local tourism, as apparently more of their visitors are there for business (it is really a convention center). Nonetheless if you happen to be in the area it is a nice stop for a comfortable and reasonably well furnished stay. This is no luxury destination by big-city standards, but highly recommended for those who are exploring outside the cities but still want some city comforts.

Spectacular views. They also report having a sauna and pool but I did not have the chance to try it.
