Backpacking in Colombia?
Hi everybody. I'm from France. I'll be in colombia for a couple of months and I've heard about a backpacker's company or something like that. I like to backpacking specially in southamerica. could everyone gives me info about that company.

I'm sorry but I don't know of a backpacking company (hopefully someone else can help you with that). But it is easy to backpack around Colombia on your own. There are a lot of hostels and you will meet up with other backpackers and you can take shorter organised tours from different places.
A very good website for accommodation and information (besides VT) is: www.hosteltrail.com

Travel Tips for Bogotá
Bogota has so many great...
by idrincon
Bogota has so many great places but because this is a site likely to be visited by travelers I would recomend to go to Monserrate. It is a Sanctuary on the east mointains of Bogota. It overlooks the city. There are only a couple of other places in the world where you can have such a breath-taking view of a city. I've lived my whole live here and when I have to travel for long periods of time I missed the weather, It is just perfect! Our temperature never goes aout of the 5-25 Degress Celsius (50-68 °F)... Its like living with Air Conditioning all the time ! Just great
Estoy Baho Control
by travelife
After the eating out we were on our way to Cara's place (who is from USA but work in Bogota) to try some Colombian shots.
Cara's genrous hospitality, that is giving me frequent and larger share of the shots made me think, perhaps it wont be easy to wake up early next day to use the day to the utmost.
My friends in Denmark say, whenever I start losing control, I keep saying 'I am under control, I am under control, I am ....' So what is it in Spanish? I asked someone.' Estoy baho control but I don think you are' he replied!
Museo Historico Policia
by morgr
This museum is housed in the former police headquarters, though that was shut down and it was turned into a museum in 1984. The only way to visit is through a free guided tour, which are in Spanish only. The first thing you see is a short multimedia type presentation highlighting the history of police work in Colombia from pre-colonial times to today. Throughout the musem you will see collections of guns, various other police paraphenilia as well as a 'international police room' which has uniforms worn by police around the world.
One of the star attractions of the museum is a downstairs exhibit on Pablo Escobar and the hunt for him. This area contains his personal Harley Davidson mortorcycle, other personal items of his including guns, a video camera and other stuff. The display here though is the actual jacket that he was wearing when he was murdered by the Colombian police, complete with gunholes and all.
Admission is free. Tue-Sat, 8am-12pm & 2pm-5pm.

places to stroll
by call_me_rhia about candelaria and parque de la 93
La Candelaria is a good place to stroll about until 10 PM - there are plenty of people in the streets and you'll feel safe. take in the beautiful lit-up colonial buildings. After 10 PM everyone "takes off", and the few peeple around look very dodgy, so it's best to leave immediately, and in a taxi.
Less interesting to stroll about, but safe until late at night, it's the Parque de la 93... with all the clubs and restaurants located around this park, you'll encounter no problems at all. However there are no interesting buildings to be seen. Dressed, please. Bogota, due to its high elevation DOESget very cold at night. A sweater and a jacket are necessary.
Typical Colombian Food
by IrishFem about Tasty dishes
If l put tips in here about restaurants l have been to, they would probably be out of date. So l will tell you about the typical delicious food that l have tasted.
The special dish of Bogota is called Ajiaco.
This is made from chicken, corn on the cob, different types of potatos with cream and capers. Served with avacado. The main ingredient is guasca, a herb that l can't find in Ireland.
Arepa con queso
One of my favourites. This is made from maize like a pancake, topped with melted cheese. I still buy them ready made in London when l visit.
Aroz con coco .. rice with coconut milk
Arroz con pollo
Rice with chicken. This dish is very typical found in most restaurants. Also includes vegtables and fish and is so tasty.
Hot chocolate..
To this day l still take it like the colombians. Cup of hot chocolate with cheese. You put the cheese into the chocolate and eat it with a spoon when you finished the chocolate. . yummy.
Empanada
Fried pasty stuffed with rice vegtables and meat.
Papa salada
Potatos boiled in the skin sprinkled with salt acompained with mashed avocado.. devine.
Plantano
Fried banana, flattened covered in salt.. not good for the heart.
Tamales
Pork or chicken with vegtables wrapped in a banana leave and steamed.
Dont forget to try the many different juices made from fresh fruit. Be careful if your buying from a vendor on the street as they use tap water that is dangeours to us Europeans. This is a Colombian restaurant offering a good regional menu. It has four outlets situated in different parts of the city: Carrera 11 con Calle 89, Avenida Jimenez, Avenida Pepe Sierra and Centro Internacional. The restaurant was founded 35 years ago and since then has been serving excelent fare, especially Ajiaco with chicken, which is a Bogotano speciality. Which is delicious.
The Restaurant at the Gold Museum again is very popular with the locals for lunch and meetings or just to relax and take it all it. The food is delicious and they serve a very tasty Ajiaco.
