where should I stay in Bogota?

by emmet7

I will be there next week on business and want to stay in fun area that is central for transport. Please recommend an area and a hotel name if possible. After work I really want to go out to hear 'live music' and visit local galleries. Thank you in advance!

In my opinion the north is the best area- safest and more quiet.

Luxury to Budget Costs for Flats in Bogota

by frankomayorga

There is all kinds of places to stay in Bogota. Much depends on the area you want to live in and what you want to do. Another factor to consider is your budget and comfort level. Allot of foreigners gravitate to the La Zona Rosa. This a very gringo friendly area but it is highly commercialized and you do not get the real feel of Bogota. Accommodation in this area is expensive. If your a backpacker kind of person you can find budget places to stay. If you are the kind of person that wants both worlds you may want to rent a furnished apartment from a local. Here is one luxury accommodation at budget prices you may want to try

Look around the Zona Rosa, The Royal La Boheme and Royal Andino are right in the center of the best bars and resturants. The Andino is on Calle 85 between 12 ans 13.

Travel Tips for Bogotá

Tap Water

by IrishFem

I am not sure what the water is like now. However l when lived in Bogota in the 80's. I got really sick because of the water. I did take precautions but because l was a vegetarian and ate mostly salads, whenever l ordered salads they were washed in tap water. I was really ill for weeks on end. Better off buying bottled water and using that brushing your teeth. There are parisites that get into your tummy, which are called amibas l think that is how its spelt. They cause havoc especially if you have a few drinks, its like a disco party in your belly and once they get in its very hard to get them out. Not very nice. Make sure you have a hepatitis A injection to prevent this.

Medical supplies.. plasters etc

by IrishFem

Backpacks, and don't let them out of your site. The weather is so changeable in Bogota. One minute its raining and the next the sun is out. Always carry rain gear or a small unmbrella. If you going outside Bogota take some medical supplies with you most of these towns don't have toilets let alone chemists.. The beer being so cheap take headache pills. Throw away cameras. Walking boots. Hat, long sleeved shirt and trousers. Mosquito Repellent. Always carry your ID. If your stopped by the police they will want to check your passport to make sure you have the correct visa.

by panderita about Unicentro

Taxi in Bogota

by travelife

Yeps, after Havana and Caracas, Bogotá seems to be a better (cheaper) destination. From the airport and on the way to old town by taxi, it seemed like I am somewhere in Europe. A good public service and security system visible. But yes the part of Bogotá where poor people live is in another part where I did not have to go. Perhaps that’s the reason I found my impression all positive.

Yello-taxi just coming out of the departure lounge I found this system. Paying and getting the receipt of my hotel address in Old town of Bogota. The chauffeur did not speak English but had a big ID laminated in front which says his is a licensed and regular cab. Another advantage was this system is built on distance instead of meter. So no worries paying more. Since I have already paid in advance I did not bother to pay any tips. The ride was about 30 min. and I paid a little more than 7 USD. Here price is quoted in both Colombian pesos and USD!

Crepes & Waffles

by Dina_CM about Crepes & Waffles

Relatively inexpensive, doesn't accept credit cards. Good place to take kids. An extensive selection of lunch/dinner crepes and waffles, as well as large bread bowls filled with entree ingredients.
Variety of desserts, my favorite was the nutella waffle with strawberries.
