missing the hideous Christmas lights
by richiecdisc
One of the great things about arriving in Bogota on New Year's Day was that all the Christmas decorations were still up. Most Colombians like most South Americans are Catholic and they take Christmas pretty seriously so it came as no surprise that the would spruce things up especially on La Plaza. What was surprising was the colorfulness and what seemed to us a big departure from tradition with regard to their tree. It was big but plastic with red and yellow plastic ornaments right out of the 1960s. Even the nativity scene was on a grandiose scale. At first we found it a bit unnerving but warmed up to it when we saw the locals' obvious affection for it. When we returned to Bogota at the tale end of our two month travels around Colombia, the tree had been taken down and we kind of missed it.

Having said all that it would remain a memorable experience for a while. All I did was being careful and getting scared of seeing the sudden steep slope of the hill while the horse was running. By the way, my no jacket and just t-shirt wasn that bad I am used to the Danish wind much worse than this. But don forget your jacket anyway.
Malls

You can shop at Unicentro just like any other department store. More up market is another mall in Santa Barbara. Staff will follow you around the store, which l found strange at first. However you do get used to it and they are not looking for tips just being helpful. The security will also check your bag before you enter and put a tag on it so you can't steal. Leather goods. Anything from clothes to suitcases and beautiful jewellery. Emeralds very cheap but make sure you go to a reputable store. You can bargain, not in the centres but the smaller shops.

This is a new bus system introduce in Bogota in recent years. In some routes you see this big and comfortable buses where you have to queue and wait. Otherwise Rich and middle-class Bogotans move around with their own cars.

Located in Zona Rosa on the top floor of an upscale mall just across from the bigger Andino Mall, you'll find this restaurant for anyone who just isn't sure what sounds good for lunch or dinner. Come here and you'll get to choose from multiple menus of multiple eateries that are all located here. The separate kitchens are all serviced by one staff of waiters and you can pick and choose from the various menus, so you can truly get a little taste of everything. The views overlooking the trendy neighborhood below are also great. They have Asian food, Colombian, Italian and more.
