Fin de año - New Year celebration

by crisstina

Hello all!

I'm going to Bogotá with 4 friends and we'd like to celebrate New Years Eve in a nice place. It can be a restaurant, hotel or something like that. Not that FORMAL but nice enough!

Does anybody has a suggestion? Or any website I can check? I appreciate any information you can give us!!

Saludo. Diana

Travel Tips for Bogotá

Changing Traveller Cheques

by Ossi.P

If you have to change American Express Travellers Cheques, visit 'Bancolombia'.
As I compared, they have one of the best exchange rates...at least their branch in Avenida Chile (I compared all banks en la Avenida Chile!!!).
I got almost the amount of the official exchange rate.
In Bucaramanga 'Banco de Santander' had a very good rate aswell, but it took me 1 hour to change them.

As i recognized this time Bancolombia will change your TCs at some places in Bogotá.
I always went next to "Unicentro" and it took me 5 minutes to get the money.

Hours for changing dollars are 9 to 12am and 1 to 4pm.

Don't forget that you need a copy of your passport when you want to change TCs as they want to keep the copy...
And consider not to change all your money at your arrival as the peso is likely to fall against the dollar...

Horseriding off the city of Bogota

by travelife

Its quite common among floks living in Bogota to go out during the weekend for horseriding off the city of Bogota on the foothills of Colombian Andes. You may see sign of them if you go outisde the city. We tried one in La Callera.

Colombia Linda & Centro Colombiano de Artesanias

by elsadran about Typical colombian stuff & souvenirs

Centro Colombiano de Artesanias and Colombia Linda are shopping centers for souvenirs and any kind of artscraft you can imagine. Their small shops and stalls are packed with every kind of artesanias, clothes, hats, bags, jewelery, baskets, decorative articles, musical instruments, cheap CDs, paintings and a thousand more items to have a pick. I found a lot of small gifts for my friends. I even found a stall with clever educative games which I was looking for!
Prices are really good and quality is not bad.

Centro Colombiano de Artesanias is on Carrera 7 #22-66/67 tel: 3364709
Colombia Linda is on Carrera 7 # 23-49.

Taxi in Bogota 2

by travelife

The following day I had to get another taxi to my friend that was based on meter and I ended up paying 8 USD for 15 min. ride.

Now, I had to get the same meter taxi to airport and had to pay 10 USD, hm Should I have waved one instead of getting a meter taxi. But Early in the morning I was not prepared for any unwanted adventure. And always thought its secure if you get one through your hotel.

Exquisite Seafood

by mircaskirca about Pescadero La Subiende

I arrived in Colombia the previous night and was quite exhausted after the long flight from Europe and almost no sleep. My luggage was lost again (exactly the same happened a year ago), I only had a little daily backpack with my personal belongings like travel documents and camera. I worried about my luggage but unfortunately there was nothing to do than keep calling to the airport to get the latest news.

After all these, I thought I needed a decent lunch, before meeting Iván in the afternoon. I wanted to find a nice place serving cazuela de marisco which is one of my favourite Colombian seafood dishes. A girl in a restaurant that I passed by recommended Pescadero La Subiende which was only a short walk from there.

The restaurant has two floors with a few tables on each of them, and it offers the greatest variety of seafood dishes from all parts of Colombia. It was above my travel budget but at that moment I wanted to treat myself to something nice. As it was lunch time the restaurants got quite busy with people working in the vicinity (Plaza de Bolívar with some of Colombia's most important institutions was just two blocks away). But to my surprise, I did not have to wait long for my meal. I had creamy cazuela de marisco (seafood casserole). It came with huge shrimp, clams, shredded lobster, squid, octopus and fish. Just love the combination of seafood, coconut milk and fresh cilantro. The dish was accompanied with rice, french fries and patacon. And a glass of freshly made strawberry juice was a nice companion to this exquisite meal.

Cazuela de marisco was 22.000 COP and the juice 4.500 COP (December 2009).
