Tours and visits in Santa Marta
by Siff
Hello,
My boss is travelling to Santa Marta and I would like to know where he can find good guides (men guides, not books) to visit the different places.
Does he have to go to travel agencies? Or can he find them on the streets? Are there many scams?
Thanks a lot!!

We were in Santa Marta on a cruise ship, and we went to the tourist office and they picked a cab driver to take us around. That worked out fine although he didn't speak English and I don't speak Spanish. I had a map and just pointed to where I wanted to go (the Cathedral primarily) My brother-in-law warned us that there are a lot of kidnappings in Santa Marta, so I probably wouldn't just pick someone up off the street.

I have visited the city of Santa Marta twice on my own, but I was never approached by any scams. When I made the Ciudad Perdida trek I arranged it through Turcol. They also make other tours in the area and they have experienced guides. They can be contacted through www.turcol.i8.com/

I was just looking for a room
by richiecdisc
At any rate, I really was just looking for a room and soon figured out that the one I already had was a bargain compared to these, not to mention the dilapidated neighborhood factor. I did get to meet some of the backpacker hostel staff who seemed much more intent on selling me a tour of Tayrona or Ciudad Perdida than renting me a room. It was only when I didn't bite that they wanted to get me to move in, I'm sure so they had another crack at selling me the tours again.
Back at the room after a quick street meal and stroll by the waterfront, my wife was looking awfully comfortable in our very nice room which now looked like the Taj Mahal. I was glad I hadn't found anything else. I wouldn't have had the heart to move her anywhere and certainly not down to that ragtag shantytown. She spent most of her time in Santa Marta in that room so it turned out to be not only a great move but the only move that would have made any sense.
A small village of Taganga
by Lodestar
If you are already in St. Marta you definately don't want to miss out on seeing a truly amazing small fishing village of Taganga. The number one place to go for diving - there are several PADI dive-shops offering diving courses and just diving trips for a relatively low price. The general atmosphare or an authentic Caribbean fishing village is also worth seeing. It is so amazingly beautiful and relaxing and calm there. And it's just a 10-minute bus-ride away from St. Marta (catch a regular collectivo from the main street, for less than 1 US $).

mainly a backpackers tourist village..before it was a fisher village
it has nice scenery a good beach, good food and nice drinks..suely worth a day visit from santa marta
Those seeking something a little more laid back should consider the nearby fishing village of Taganga. Taganga is a more laid back village, and just outside of Santa Marta itself. The village is in a pretty bay, and there is an OK beach on which to relax. There's a few pretty small beaches nearby (eg. Playa Grande), and some beautiful coastal walks. Taganga is also a popular place to organise a scuba diving course in Colombia.
Taganga is one of Colombia's top backpacker hangouts. It's Santa Marta's "alternative" little brother as such, and tourists have been known to dabble in the use of illegal substances. Reading other guidebooks you might be lead to believe that this is a peaceful idyllic fishing village - maybe it was like this 10 years ago, but it's not now. Vendors will hassle you on the beach, and music blares out of beachside restaurants until late at night, especially so on the weekends. "Laid back" it may be, but peaceful it's not
I guess the Tayrona were bigger than the Kogi
by richiecdisc
There is a bit of an odd monument to the native people of this region on the waterfront. I saw it before going into the mountain regions where some of them still live so had no idea what they looked like at the time so thought little of it aside from the fact that it seemed a little sexy for what seemed a family beach town. The native woman's nipples seemed a bit shall we say swollen. At any rate, both male and female figures were quite muscular and on the big side. The woman looked like she wold make mincemeat of a mere mortal man. Well, out on the trek we saw the local Kogi and there were quite small, actually petite. Even the men were on the delicate side in stature and bone structure. They were nimble footed and could race up and down mountains, across rivers, you name it. I'm sure for their size, they were very strong too but they in no way looked like the statue in town. When I saw them on my return, I could only laugh at the generous depiction.
