Salento & Cocora Valley
Salento is a little 'pueblo paisa' a short ways north of Armenia. It's a charming little town, though in my opinion, a little too touristy, whith practically every shop along carrera 6 being tourist oriented. Salamina, north of Manizales, is a better option to see a genuine 'pueblo paisa'. This does not mean not to visit, by all means do!
Cocora Valley, a short ways outside of Salento, is famous for its 'palma de cera' or wax palms. Our tourguide at the botanical gardens had told us that this type of palm tree is the national tree of Colombia, the tallest specimen of palm tree, as well as the one which grows at the highest altitudes.
