I actually made a reservation in Plantation House. But on my arrival they told me that all private rooms were occupied and they can only offer me to stay in dorm room, which I did not like. I arrived there in the rain, completely wet, and needed my own space more than anything. Then Cristina, the owner, phoned to another guest house close by to ask if they had any rooms available. Five minutes later their son came with a big umbrella to help me with my bag and delivered me to my new 'temporary home', Las Palmas. This guest house is located on Calle 6 that leads up to the main plaza. It has only a couple of rooms, all with bathroom en suite. I had a big room with three comfortable beds and TV. There was a terrace at the top of the house. Most of the nights I was the only guest. The price of the room was 40.000 COP. Since I stayed there for four nights she gave me discount.
I did not expect that would be so cold and rainy for almost the whole week so I run out of clean 'warm clothes'. I asked señora Rosmira (the owner) if she could do the laundry for me which she immediately did. The problem was that because of the rain the clothes did not get dry. So she ironed them, one by one, as I needed them. She did not charge anything. That was very nice from her :) Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than averageAddress: Calle 6 No. 3-02Phone: 6 759 3065Directions: only a few blocks from the main plaza

The Plantation House is a nice place to stay at in Salento. The hostel now consist of two old farmhouses on different sides of a road. There are dorms and there are private rooms, a few with bathroom. I stayed in a room without bathroom (in the first house) and paid 30 000 pesos a night (July 2008). The room was simple but I liked it very much and the bed was very comfortable. The hostel is situated in the end of the town so it is quiet and from the hammocks in the end of the garden you have a beautiful view over the valley. The owners Tim and Cristina can give you a lot of information, Cristina in Spanish and Tim also in English. There is a kitchen and free coffee. You will also find games, books to exchange, a computer and a refrigerator with beer. It is nice and relaxing to sit on the porch after a day out, but it can be a bit cold so put on a sweater. To go to the Plantation House you should get off the bus at the Fire Station, just as you enter town. Then take right, and right again. It is about 100 metres to the hostel from the Fire Station.

This hospedaje (without a name) is in a families house, and is fairly cozy. The front door is locked at night, and they don't give you a key, so you have to wake them up....which I felt kinda bad doing. Hot water. Spanish only, no English spoken. view over Plantation House garden by rambling_rose Simple but comfortable rooms and a junglely garden - this is on the edge of the town but feels like you're in the middle of nowhere. Very quiet, there are private rooms as well as dorms split between three buildings.

The Posada del Cafe, located in the heart of town, was one of our highlights in Colombia. The owner, Maria-Elena, made our stay fantastic. She babysat our daughter while we hiked one day, took us on another hike to a friends private house where a beautiful botanical garden was located, and gave us all the information we needed for our time in Salento. There are only 5 or 6 rooms, but they beautifully decorated with comfortable beds. There is a very nice hostel in town that is very popular with backpackers, but if you want to pamper yourself, this is the place to stay. We paid about US $30, which for Colombia was on the upper end for accommodation.
Wonderful owner, beautiful inner garden, very quiet.

In Salento, 5 stars Hotels are not an option. On the other hand, houses or local properties can be rented, and some of them also have horses, lakes where you can practice fishing. Don't expect luxury kind of things, everything has a colonial style, but still cosy. Julian Clavijo
