Visiting Cali in April first time
by englishman007
Hi, I'll be visiting Cali in April, and being gay, I was hoping someone might give me a few pointers into where to go and where not to go. I know in many latin countries, gay life is very don;t ask don't tell. Is there a specific area where I can go and stay, or are gay clubs spread out over the city? What do I need to look out for- I live in new York, so obviously I'll use my gut feeligns, but any ideas on specifics I should look out for- hustlers, and the like- that I might miss... any decent hotels in the gay area?
Many thanks Mike

Laguna Beach, CA (orange county)! Beautiful and Gay

Being gay in Bangkok is not quite the same as in America. Gays are prevalent almost everywhere and widely accepted. The Silom area has a street that has mostly all gay restaurants, bars, pubs, etc. I have never been in any of them, but so I can't recommend. However, I can tell you it is the Patpong area where nightlife abounds. Check out www.bangkoktonight.com I think there may be some links there and some information which may be useful for you. There are many places in the Silom area in which you can stay, and it is an area where transportation is close...bts "skytrain", mrt "underground". This is a very congested area in which you literally can find or do anything you want. Personally I stay clear of it because I get sick of the hundreds of touts there. Restaurants of every type are plentiful, along with major shopping areas. Lumpini Park, which is huge and beautiful, is there too.

I live in Laguna Beach, known for it's artists and gay community. Also, in Cali you will find San Francisco and Palm Springs/Palm Desert to have extremely high gay populations. There are clubs and restaurants that cater to a gay clientele, but you will find that people are very open and accepting of alternative lifestyles of many different types. I have many gay friends,(I am straight), but our orientation is never a factor in where we hang out, what we do, etc. You will not find "street hustlers" harassing you in any of the cities I've mentioned, unless you are seeking them. In Laguna Beach, there are several gay clubs, "Club Bounce" is one of them. In San Francisco, "The Castro" area has a high percentage of gay businesses, bars, etc. It is all very open and personally, most people could not care whether you are gay or straight. So, just go and have a great time !!

The replies you got are either for California or Bangkok....and not for Cali, Colombia as where you posted your question and where you want to go to....
In your other posting I tried to give you an answer.

I don;t know where you get off criticizing me for wanting to visit latin America- read my mail more intently and you will see that the idea of a "gay sex holiday" is exactly what I am trying to AVOID. Sure, to meet other gay guys is an intention- but not in the sleazy, seedy way you seem to be indicating.
If you have nothing good to add- don't bother trying to be so self-righteous and criticize me.
Travel Tips for Cali

Ah, where do I begin? Is it dancing all night with your Colombian friends? Is it paying $2.50 a person to see a movie at the Chipichape Cinima in english (spanish subtitles) in huge reclining chairs and $4.00 for a huge tub of popcorn and two large sodas? Going to the Polo store at the mall and getting thirteen nice shirts, two pair of pants, and one blouse for $168? The zoo is nice... You must try Chilian wine. If you like to smoke you can buy Cuban cigars in Cali!!! A carton of cigarettes is around $10.00. You must sit at an outdoor cafe and talk to the people of Cali, they are great. On Christmas they have a big parade of people riding horses down Ave Sexta. It's crazy! I love eating mangos and finding different types of tropical fruit in Cali.
Salsa is More Than Just Music
by mircaskirca
Cali is known as the Capital de la Salsa and the sensuous tropical rhythms of salsa pervade the lives of Caleños. You'll hear it on every bus or taxi, there's salsa on almost all of the many local radio stations. All over town, 24-hours a day, salsa blasts from speakers on the street, in parks, shops, from cars and homes. Cali lives and breaths salsa. There are salsa dance schools through the city and it's important to dance very well. Salsa classes are not just the place to go for learning, they are a good meeting place as well.
You don't have to go far in this city to hear all the different styles and variations of salsa. The eastern suburb Juanchito is heart of Cali's salsa nightlife where you'll find some of the best salsotecas. Most of them have live salsa music. Cali has many excellent world class groups and musicians of salsa, blending the old with the new.

El Paraiso

one of the most notable works of the Romantic movement in Spanish literature is the novel, Maria, by Jorge Isaacs which was published in 1867. This book tells the story of Maria who actually lived in this hacienda many years ago. For a small fee, you get to enter the home, get a tour (in spanish), and can walk through the gardens. This is where I asked my mother-in-law for permission to marry my wife. This place has special meaning to Colombians who are romantics as most everyone in the country loves the story of Maria.
Outside the home is some street venders selling all types of local food and a couple of restaurants you can have lunch at. I recommend trying the mamoncillos which are a type of fruit that is very tasty.
El Paraiso is about 40 minutes north of Cali in El Cerrito. I would suggest just renting a taxi for the day. Make sure you have a local with you who can negotiate with the driver....once you open your mouth, the driver will try to take advantage of the tourist and charge much higher prices.
Iglesia & Museo De La Merced
by morgr
The museum is housed in the same complex as the church, which is the oldest church in the city, having been built in 1545. The church is a typical whitewashed Spanish colonial style building.
The archeological museum is in the former convent. It is a small museum that has pottery and relics from pre-colonial times.
Museum open Mon-Sat, 9am-1pm & 2pm-6pm
Plaza de San Francisco
by mircaskirca
Plaza de San Francisco is a huge brick square and one of the largest in Cali, where people gather to chill out, and it's also a much liked place of pigeons. Sometimes there are concerts. During my visit of Cali the 1st Marimba festival took place here for three nights, and during the day sometimes some small groups played as well.
Though the square is most famous for its church, Iglesia de San Francisco. Dating from the 18th century, this large brick neo-classical church is next to the Convento de San Francisco and Capilla de la Immaculada. Opposite stands Torre Mudéjar (Moorish Tower), an unusual brick tower which is considered one of the finest examples of Spanish-Moorish architecture in South America.
