just be careful if you are staying in the center "el centro", it can be a little scary: just take a lot of precautions: watch your wallet at all times, no jewelry, may be a cheap watch and nothing else... the center is beautiful though: the best architecture around! visit "la Iglesia de la Merced" one of the 1 chapels... go to "San Antonio" also, the hotel Intercontinental... for a casino night! there are many museums, clubs, bars around... itis a very beautiful city to visit!

Panoramic View of Cali, the mountains you see in the back are the FARALLONES OF CALI. Cali is an example city for Colombia, because is the cleanest and more civilized of all the department´s capitals of Colombia. The nice thing about this city, is that despite it hot weather year round, you drive a few miles up the mountain and you will have a more cool dry weather, and three ours of driving throught and into the mountain you get to the pacific ocean.
Festival de la Marimba
by mircaskirca
Being the third Latino American city with the biggest density of African population after Havana (Cuba) and Salvador de Bahia (Brazil), Cali has got the honour to be the seat of Festival de la Marimba. Marimba is believed to have originated in Africa, but it has been a part of Colombian culture since a long time.
The chonta (palm tree) marimba is the main instrument of the Colombian South Pacific. Black men, brought to America as slaves, build it out of their memories, using the materials which can be found on the new land. It's a typical percussion instrument of this traditional musical area. There are a lot of songs and rhythms, and in musical terms it is possible to distinguish the following rhythms: juga, bambuco viejo, bunde, patacoré and pango.
Primer Festival de la Marimba (First Festival of Marimba) was a festival within 51 Feria de Cali, and took place from 27th to 29th of December 2008 on Plazoleta de San Francisco (06:00pm-11:00pm). Some of the best groups performed and at the end they select the best instrumentalist and the Marimba King. Call-and response interplay between women's voices, insistent pummeling rhythms on various percussion instruments, and marimba dominate the arrangements. This was my first encounter with marimba and I very much enjoyed it!!

Parque de los Poetas
by mircaskirca
Between two cultural landmarks of Cali, Iglesia de la Ermita and Teatro Jorge Isaacs, is found Parque de los Poetas. The park was built in 1995 in tribute to the poets of Valle del Cauca. It is used as the venue for cultural presentations of all kinds. The last Thursday of each month it becomes a meeting place of poetry lovers with writers and poets as guests.
In the park you find five inanimate muses and can appreciate the immortality of important writers of the city, such as Jorge Isaacs, Ricardo Niero, Carlos Villafañe, Antonio Llanos and Octavio Gamboa. Here you find an inspiring power of a place of social and cultural tradition which does not die with the years. Sculptor José Antonio Moreno is the author of the works set out in the park.
Teatro Municipal Enrique Buenaventura
by mircaskirca
Construction of the beautiful yellow Teatro Municipal began in April 1918 and it was inaugurated on November 1927 with the opera The Troubadour by the Italian company Bracale. In 1953 it was remodeled and reopened in 1954, during the 450 years of the founding of the city. Inspired by the Italian opera theatre, this neoclassical theatre holds up to 1.200 people in its stylish and elaborate European-like interior. It was declared a national monument in 1982.
The theatre is located in the historic centre, along with other institutions that form the epicentre of culture and heritage of Cali. Today it is used for various artistic performances, including musical concerts, theatre and ballet.
