View from my room at Mama Hildas by StephanB Another fantastic Hostal in Ecuador. Mama Hilda's was in Chugchilen, which is one of the small towns visited doing the Quilatoa Loop. The town has 3 hostals. Mama Hildas, Cloud Forest hostal, and the Black Sheep Inn. Mama Hildas was a great place with good, cheap rooms ($10 for my own large room, breakfast included), Cloud forest was not quite as nice, but still looked really nice, and the Black Sheep was closed for remodeling, but is supposed to be incredible, although very expensive. You can rent horses from the hostal, or set up a guide to get to the next town. The dinners are also very good, and that is important as I didn't see a restaurant in town.

Don't have a photo, but this Waterfall was outside by StephanB Just down the street from Hostal Blancas Y Plantas (#1 listed in Lonely Planet ) was the Hostal Chiminea. It's brand new, so the rooms were really nice. They were putting in a pool and finishing up the construction while i was there (May '07 ). $8 a night and i had a beautiful room with bath. They have a very nice terrace up top where they serve a good breakfast (didn't have dinner there). I don't know high season is, but just as every where else in Ecauador, there were no problems finding a room. One night I was the only guest they had.
Nice terrace, clean rooms, free internet ( a little slow, but not $2 an hour as in town) Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: Just down the street from Hostal Blancas Y Plantas which is in all the guide books.

View from the hostal by StephanB Wonderful place to stay in Vilcabamba. It is located just outside of town, about 2 kilometers, with a fantastic view of the valley. The place is German owned, and as well as a full menu of local dishes, they serve up some really nice German meals. They have a pool, but it was a little cold during my visit in May. The bar area is cool place to hang out, and the rooms are really nice. I had my own large room with bath for $15 a night. A little high, but I'm just a little too old to go the dorm room option. The distance from town wasn't a big deal. They provided some bikes (a little beat up) free of charge to get to town, and if the uphill ride back to the hostal was not an option, you could through the bike in the taxi/ pickup for a $1 ride back to the hostal.
Great staff, great food, great rooms. Theme: Pension/GuesthousePrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageDirections: 2 kilometers outside of Vilcabamba.

The Secret Garden, just outside the old town area, is a great place to stay. More for the atmosphere than for the rooms. The dorms are fine, if you can handle a dorm. I can't. Too noisy for me to get any sleep. They have nice single and double rooms, but they are definitely on the high side for accommodation. I paid $7 for a dorm bed, 7 in a room, and a single room was over $20 after taxes. The up side is the great terrace upstairs. Fantastic food and a very good place to meet other travelers. There were also a number of people taking spanish classes at the hostel for around $7 an hour for one on one lessons. After a few nights staying there, I moved for 2 nights to the Hostal Chicago, just around the corner. I paid $15 (7.50 each) to share a room with another traveler and we had our own bathroom. The place was fine, but it didn't have nearly the vibe that Secret garden had. It worked out great because I would just have dinner at the Secret garden, hang with my new friends, and then sleep down the street. Also very close to Secret Garden was Hostal San Blas ( Located in Plaza San Blas ) which was a really nice place also. Single room with bath for $7.50, single shared for $5.75, and dorms even cheaper. All in all, unless you want to get drunk and hang out with other drunk backpackers, I would highly recommend staying in the Old Town area as opposed to the Mariscal (Gringolandia) area. It is safer, cleaner, and has much more character than the newer area.

After stumbling down from our failed attempt on Cotopaxi, Hotel Cuello de Luna was a wonderful, quiet retreat just down the road from the turn-off to Cotopaxi. Check out their website: http://www.cuellodeluna.com/ for all of the logistical details. It is a mile or so (give or take a mile) off of the Panamerican Hwy but well worth the walk (even with 80 lbs of gear on your back). Kick back, relax, pet the llamas and enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains. It's more of a retreat than a conveniently located place to stay. Take a break from the city and just chill. Take advantage of the meals they cook - excellent and well worth the splurge (coming from an infamous cheapskate).

This is the ONLY place I stay in Otavalo. Features clean rooms, community kitchen, diverse crowd, roof patio, BBQ grill, prvt bathrooms, and the best host ever, Roberto. Rooms are only $5-6 pp. Located in the south end of town, central to everything. Downstairs has a nice reception area and bar. There is a pool/spa/sauna just one block away that none of the touirists know about for $1.50.
Great views of Imbabura and Cotacochi from the patios. Nice friendly atmosphere, guests often eat together and relax with music and drinks afterwards. You can cook in the kitchen, or use the upstair BBQ grill and patio. Close to stores, restaurants, and food market. You can also grab a local buses thru town, the hostel is just 2 blocks off the main bus route. Great view over the entire city.
