spartan but clean by richiecdisc This simple typical Ecuadorian hotel was a real gem. It was clean if spartan and the owners were very helpful and friendly. It was also a great location and very reasonably priced. There are different types of rooms, some with bath, some without as well as those opening onto the street via windows and those that are more closed in with only windows into the admittedly dark halls. This is common in these old style hotels and there are pros and cons to both styles. We opted for a room with outside window as it was much brighter. It was a bit noisy during the day and early evening but we weren’t in the room all that much during those hours and even when we were it felt like we could enjoy the energy of the street right from our bed! It was plenty quiet at night. It was also very secure. You had to ring to get in the building and the person letting the people in certainly knew who belonged and who didn't. A room with a double bed and private bath with window was only $12 a night for two. .
The owners were nice enough to let us keep our extra gear in their storage room while we did the Quilotoa loop which allowed us to travel with less luggage on the bus as well as walk one section of the loop. Our stuff was waiting for us along with our room on our return. No picture - Pas d'image by Maillekeul The rooms are colourful, and even if the place is next to the main market (that, after all, is not such an inconvenient !), the hotel is very calm. Hot water and local TV. Les chambres sont colorees et la proximite du marche n'est vraiment pas de nature a perturber le repos des Justes. Eau chaude et TV locale.

This place is a dump! Don't believe their website, and don't trust the pictures. We were not only disappointed, but disgusted. First, the lobby smelled like urinal pucks. Then, the food was like garbage on our plates. The rooms were terrible, but we couldn't complain because there was a sign, which is in each room, stating "We Never Promised You Paradise." How appropriate. They did have large grounds, so we decided to take a walk around. There were mini-ponies that were attacking each other and chewing on each other's mange. Then, there were are few fountains, all empty of water. The highlight was the "Lake with Boats" which they advertise on their website. It was a big pool of goose feces and urine that smelled like a cesspool. It made you sick to your stomach. And the 'boats' were nothing more than washbins loosely held together with boards in the shape of a boat. We want to complain to the darwin association because they have an endangered galapagos turtle that is living in turkey feces, with no protection from the warmth - I can't imagine a tortoise's natural habitat is the very cold Andes!!! And the hotel staff was VERY RUDE!!!! They were AWFUL!! Avoid this place like the plague - in fact, you might GET the plague if you fall in the urine lake!
Leaving makes you really happy. That's unique I guess! Except that you just paid for a scam, making the happiness bittersweet.
