This hotel, settled just before the village of Vilcabamba, is a mini-paradise... Rooms are clean (except the ones at the bottom of the property) and very well designed. 12 USD (without taxes) per person per day, included breakfast and dinner (very veryyyyy tasty !!) and 1/2 an hour of jacusi ... We really enjoyed this place, met very nice people and didn't see the days going by....
Everything is made for you : massage, jacusi, mudbath, treks in the Parque nacional Podocarpus, horse-riding, biking, table tennis, video, hamacs... | | | | Las Ruinas de Quinara aka Casa de Mauricio: AVOID THE PLACE ! A EVITER D'URGENCE ! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
When I was in Vilcabamba, I was told about this hotel that was far from being unanismously recommended by everybody around. People from the village itself or other tourism professionals agreed on the bad fame of this hotel, Las Ruinas de Quinara aka Casa de Mauricio. This was mostly a consequence of its owner’s behaviour, who terrorizes the neighbourhood. In order to attract more travelers to his hotel, the owner does not hesitate to lie about the reputation and the quality of the other hotels, who are more than respectable, or, at least, try and do their work with honesty : a lot of people who have been to Las Ruinas de Quinara complained about thefts and struggles, sudden changes in the prices and bad maintenance of the rooms. Everything can be checked in Vilcabamba’s tourist office. The situation has also been described recently in some guidebooks, among which the Lonely Planet Guidebook. Leave a Comment Theme: Hotel

 | | | | Casa de Mauricio (also known as Ruinas de Quinoa),: Vilcabamba's best guesthouse! | Tip Rating: Satisfaction: | | | | |
Folks, I stayed in Casa de Mauricio (also known as Ruinas de Quinoa), for about $10 USD back in 2001. The place was wonderful and the hospitality was superb. Time changes and by the time you go there you may experience a totally different place. All I can say before you trust a written review from anyone, such as myself, is to never pay in advance, unless it's not possible. See for yourself in person. If the situation looks good then go for it and stay Why trust what someone says (even a guidebook)? After all, it can be influenced by a greater force, such as money.
***Back in 2001, -$10 US -bed -breakfast and dinner included -all you can use sauna, jacuzzi, pool -movie room with free movies -free billiards, ping-pong, and more. What more can you ask for eh? | | | | Izchayluma: Best being Izchayluma, Worst Being Mauricio's | Satisfaction: | | | | |
I've spent a large amount of time in Vilcabamba; approximately one year. Had a lot of first-hand exposure to many of the hostels, and heard many many stories from other travellers passing through. Figured I should give my 2 cents to help out anyone wondering where to Stay in Ecuador. I'd say the best place is Hosteria Izchayluma. It's not the cheapest in Town (and actually is 2km outside of town) but that's on the Ecuadorian sliding scale. The views are amazing, the service is friendly, and the owners are great. Be sure to Say hi to Peter and Dieter if you pass through. Even if you decide to not stay at Izchayluma, it has one of the best resturants in town, so go ahead and give them a visit. Once you see their facilities, you might end up changing your accomodations. =) And while I'm here to share the joys of Izchayluma (no, I don't work there) I should put out that there are many options in Vilcabamba; most very affordable. The biggest piece of advice I can give, however, is AVOID Ruinas del Quinara (AKA, Casa del Mauricio). Avoid this place... stay away, especially if you are a female travelling alone. I myself had conversations with 5 travellers who had physical run-ins with the owner... 3 or 4 females who complained of unwelcomed behaviors from the owner (coming into their room late at night, without invitation, unwelcomed physical contact, etc.), and plenty of locals who just plain hate the guy. All that is in addition to the rumors and stories you'll hear about town. So when you get off at the busstop, and someone tries to pick you up in a pickup to go to Ruinas de Quinara, say "No Gracias, yo quiero ir a Hosteria del Izchayluma" Theme: HostelPrice: less than US$20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than average

OK, I have not stayed in this really nice place, two kilometers away from the center of Vilcabamba, but I have lunched over there (around 4 USD) and it was reeeeeaaally good !! The view from up there is incredible...
