    What a great experience

Hot spots Camp was our base camp during our three day stay in the Reserva de produccion Faunistica Cuyabeno.

It was great to stay so deeply in the Rainforest. Especially the sounds at night were great.

We did sleep on kind of open verandas. Each one had a mosquito net tent with a mattress in it. There were even cushions, and linen, what a luxury, so deep in the jungle.

    The Mosquito tents

It was great to sleep in those tents; it was a bit as sleeping outside but without the naughty insects.

How wonderful it was to wake up in these conditions, by the first light and with the sound of an awaking rainforest.

And after a slowly wake up, the day started with a swim in the river, as there was no running water to take a shower.

There was only one negative point: the sound of the zippers of the tent from people who needed to go to toilet in the middle of the night.
And of course as the first went to the toilet, the rest followed, it was kind of a concert of opening and closing zippers.

And what to say of all the strong torch lights that lighted my tent while the owners were searching for the path in order to find the toilet block (I did sleep in a corner tent, so they all passed my tent on the road to the toilet).

Our stay included 5 days and 4 nights at the Cuyabeno Lodge. Transfers from the airport in Lago Agrio were included (3 hours minibus + 2 hours boat). Our cabin consisted of one bedroom - 2 beds, desk and a private bathroom with hot water. No electricity, however there is a solar panel with plug for rechargeable batteries.

All meals and excursions were included.

You live in comfortable 2-bed cabins, in cabines for families or more people just next to primary rainforest. A very good kitchen, a dining room outside under a big palm-roof.
In one way a great experience and a outcome for the Huorani people, on the other way should tourists disturb the peace of this beautiful oasis in wilderness ?

Built in the style of the indigenous Amazon people, in complete harmony with the surrounding jungle. BATABURO LODGE was built in Ecuador to provide a long-term economic alternative for the Huaorani, who are currently faced with severe pressures from oil exploration in and around their territory. The BATABURO Cabins offer the Huaorani a viable way to maintain their self-sufficiency and independence into the next decades.

  • Directions: Located 90 kilometeres south-east from the city of Coca in the Huaorani Territory you can reach BATABURO only by boat on the Tiguino River.

  • The beach where we camped - Cuyabeno
    The beach where we camped
    by dtimoske
Wow! Camping was an incredible experience. We camped two nights in the jungle area and a couple of nights on a sandy island. Both were incredible. The guides constructed a tarp covering for our tents to protect us from even the most violent storms. On our night on the beach, we did weather a fierce storm and rain that lasted at 10 hours. It gave us a chance to catch some extra sleep though. Camping gives you the opportunity to be flexible during your travels down or up the river. In some cases I wish the guide would have made a definite decision about where to stay instead of making it a democracy, but nevertheless, I enjoyed the experience. I used my backpack as an extra pillow inside the tent. This insured that my bag stayed a little dryer. The sandy beach offered some great views but the sand flies were almost unbearable. Also, sleeping on sand is not the most comfortable place to sleep. As long as you don't have a bad back, the pros of camping definitely outweigh the cons.

We had a cook with us that was absolutely amazing. Not only did he catch a fish with a machete, but he also skillfully built a shelter that weathered a powerful storm.

While I love the experience of great hotels, for a trip to the jungle, the experience is a little wasted in the lodge. Save your money for great hotels for the cities!

I stayed one night in the Cuyabeno River Lodge, and 4 nights in a tent. The tent was a more amazing experience in my opinion. The lodge, however, gave us an opportunity to take a shower in relative comfort and to sleep on a real mattress.

The lodge features an observation point on the roof of the main building to watch birds. There are also several trails into the jungle. Located on the banks of the Cuyabeno River, it's easy to catch a morning swim or take the canoe down river.
