Auberge Inn: Nice and friendly

  • A very nice address, ideally located between old an new Quito. You can eat in a small but nice restaurant or cook yourself in the kitchen. The owners are friendly and helpful and you can meet other travellers.

Hotel Huasi Continental: a true Ecuadorian Hotel
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Most gringos stay in the New Town when visiting Quito and that alone should tell you to stay in the Old Town. If all you care about is drinking/dancing your nights away then by all means follow the masses but if you want to be where all the city's great sights are and have a more authentic Ecuadorian experience then the Old Town is for you.

There are now more choices in the Old Town, some that are much like their counterparts in the New Town and teeming with gringos but this great hotel isn’t one of them. It was probably the best value room we had on the entire trip with functional, good size clean rooms, a helpful staff though appropriately that help will come in Spanish, and a great central location. It was safe and generally pretty quiet though lower floor rooms get some noise from the lobby. Also avoid street side rooms due to traffic. The interior rooms have windows that open to either a courtyard or the more quiet rear of the building. Rooms with private bath are only 7 dollars per person and those without are only $4 per person! We splurged on the private bath but the common facilities were clean and convenient enough.

I decided late in the afternoon that I wanted to spend the night in Quito. While some other hostals were full, this one had plenty of room. It is not as extravagant as some of the other hostals, but if you just need a place to sleep, this is the place. Prices in February 2005: For a bed in a dormatiory: $7/night Room with Private Bath: $13 ($26 for two) Room with shared bath: $10 ($20 for two)

Breakfast included (served between 7:30 and 9:45). Terrace. Kitchen. Laundry Service ($0.8/kg). Storage of luggage available. Hot showers. Safe available. Reception sells water and coke.

Hotel Alameda Real/Grand Mercure: Upscale hotel, reasonable price
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Our hotel, included in our Galapagos tour package, was the Hotel Alameda Real in Quito's new town. This hotel is fairly soulless and decorated in a late-1970s style, but the rooms are very comfortable, clean, and spacious. We had a suite, with one bedroom and a small sitting room, plus a well-equipped bathroom. I think the price was around $100 a night, which for this quality of hotel seemed quite reasonable. Since I stayed there, I believe that the management of this hotel has changed, and it is now known as the Grand Mercure. While this hotel was very satisfactory and comfortable, there are much cheaper options available in Quito. We noticed plenty of places for less than $25 a night.

A good hotel, in the centre of the old city. So like this it is excellent to visit the old part of the city. And even if you want to visit the new part of the city, the trolleybuses are just outside the hotel.

It is a 4 Star hotel. There was a restaurant at the top floor with a great view over Plaza Santo Domingo (and of course with good food)

Ils ont meme un sauna, une terrace et un bon resto au RDC !

Hotel Real Audiencia: Great Value - Fantastic Service
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I reserved a room via internet (in Spanish) without having to give out a credit card number. I was promised a driver at the Quito airport - at no charge. Unfortunately, a tropical storm in Houston made me miss my connection. I called the hotel from the Houston airport to apologize, and cancel the driver as well as my first night. "Do not worry Señor," I was told, "No se preocupa." I finally arrived at the hotel at 9:00 the following morning, via Guayaquil. I was greeted with kindness and attention. I was offered a different room if the one available so early wasn't quite right (and the room was perfectly fine). Although this is an inexpensive hotel, the concierge service is equal to any, as good as at the prestigious Shangri-La chain for instance.

My room was on the third floor (no elevator) with a fine view of the Panecillo. The street was a bit noisy until 11 p.m. The hotel has a panoramic restaurant with a beautiful view of the Plaza de San Domingo, where I had a fine vegetarian fettucine in a spinach sauce seasoned with ginger for less than $5. There are two computers available for patrons who wish to check their email. Breakfast is included. All this for $28 a night!

This hostel is really nice. I stayed here 4 times in my 3 months in Ecuador, as Quito was a stopover on my trips around the country. The rooms are basic, but clean and ok. Toilet and showers are located on the hallways, but there are 3 or 4 bathrooms, and I never experienced waiting time. They have hot water most of the time. There is a hallway with different kind of literature left behind by travelers, and there is a notice board with messages. There are also a kitchen and a TV-room, as well as a garden/courtyard, where you can hang out with fellow travelers. The front door is locked, but you can ring the bell day and night and let will let you in.

The staff is friendly and as we got to know each other they always reserved the same room for me, and even wanted to make a guy swap room, when I showed up unexpected. When I stayed there in year 2000 the price pr. person was $4. This was the price pr. person, no matter whether you stayed in a single, double or trible room.

Don't let the name fool you, it sounds like a big, international hotel. But, this place is just a simple, yet comfortable, Ecuadoran hotel. It's only a few blocks away from Amazonas Avenue. They take Amex, Diners Club, Mastercard and Visa.

Friendly staff, great location, decent breakfasts. All for very little cash. And speaking of unique qualities, the rooms have some of the most bizarre paintings you've seen. Almost disturbing in some ways. The one in our room looked like a paint-by-numbers version of Munch's "The Scream" There is a restaurant on-site, and the food is good if unremarkable. Breakfast is a good deal and of good quality.
