The Secret Garden Hostel: Overpriced and overrated
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is meant to be the best hostel in South America, I have to disagree. It was overpriced ($10 per person for a twin room with shared bathroom), the rooms were noisy (ours was next to the washing machineswhich ran until midnight and started again at 10am), the showers were cold (despite a sign promising 24/7 hot water) and when we checked out and complained about the hot water, the staff member said 'join the queue, what do you want me to do about it, I'm hungover and vomiting?' and this was the guy preparing the (overpriced) breakfast.

The only good points were the fantastic view from the (overpriced) bar and the lovely pillows (the only decent pillows we had in the whole of South America!)

Good views, shame about everything else!

    Tourblanche Hotel: A lovely find!
  • Satisfaction:
  • Gorgeous, clean, classy hotel - a full breakfast included. The stairs were a little rough at a new altitude, but the front desk clerk was very gracious about helping us up and up and up.

Our room offered a nice view of the city (close to the Plaza de Toros) as well as airplanes landing - quite a site!

Quiet - great service! Even though we arrived late at night, they helped us get settled in with a comfy room and bottled water on the house!

Vieja Cuba: Vieja Cuba - Good location
  • Satisfaction:
  • Overall, this hotel was very good. Room was clean, staff was friendly and mostly helpful. The breakfast was good, but limited in choices. Location was very good. Within 10-15 minute walk to places to hang out. Some of the streets at night are dark and lonely. Must be vigilant, just like any other large city. Large blvds are nearby, so finding public buses are easy.
Did not like that they close the front door at night. Not a big deal, but if you get home late, you have to ring a (cute) bell, which alerts a guard to open the door.

Free Internet available. Good breakfast, but choices are limited. This B&B is very nice looking, inside and out. Laundrys are 10 mintute walk away.

  • Directions: Dark at night with not a lot of foot traffic. Take a $2-$3 cab ride to the nightlife. The area is fine during the daytime.

hostel revolution quito: real backpacker hostel
  • Satisfaction:
  • This is a fantastic new hostel in the old town made by backpackers and for backpackers. It is small to medium size with three dorm rooms and two privates, the dorm rooms are excellent value at $5 a bed. The house is a renovated historical building with a rooftop terrace with fab views. The beds are very comfortable, there are modern bathrooms with hot showers 24hrs. It has a shared kitchen with all the facilities you need, there is a tv lounge with dvds also. The best thing for me was the bar and the chance to socialise with the friendly staff and other guests, though there were not many people there as I was one of the first customers. Great tunes and a very friendly vibe.
The rooms dont have private bathrooms and the private rooms are usually booked. In the morning a bit of traffic passed by but it didnt bother me. The rooms are on the floor above the bar so when there are people partying you dont hear it because they shut the doors to keep in the noise. this hostel is great for those travelling alone or with little English, the people that run the place backpacked around south america so they gave me lots of advice. Probably not the first choice for people wanting privacy and not into the socialising thing. the area is quiet at night but a couple of good restaurants closeby. At night I went out with the staff after drinks at the bar. The Mariscal area is best for the nightlife but it is really close and only $1.50 -$2 by taxi or you can catch the bus and be there in about 10 minutes. The best thing is that you are right on the edge of the historical center, and that is where all the things to see are. The Mariscal has too many tourists and really only good for bars and western food.
A real backpacker hostel suited more to the young or young at heart.
