by isac605

i am planning to learn spanish in quito. i heard there are oer 60 of them in the city and it is the best place to do so in s america b/c ecuadorians speak relatively slow when compared to their spanish speaking neighbour. any recommendation for a school? i am looking at may be 4 weeks of school in quito and use it as a base for travelling around ecuador.

Hello!
Im Ecuadorian and I live in Quito. If you want some information about Spanish schools you should better look for in the Catholic University, in Quito, which is pretty good. Concerning apartments, it depends the place where you want to live. There are some people who will want you to pay a higher price. You must be aware of that, cause generally they are cheap, if we compare to other parts in the world. In case you want to contact me, you can do it at: patty0912aj@hotmail.com and I can help you.

Travel Tips for Quito

Old Town

by travelmad478

The Old Town is the colonial section of Quito, a large and strikingly well-preserved area of buildings dating from the first appearance of the Spanish conquerors through the early 1900s. The majority of Quito's historical tourist sites are here, but amazingly, when we visited, my friend Vera and I were almost the only tourists around. Quito's Old Town is not just a museum, though--it's very much a living city, with offices, markets, shops, and restaurants filling the historic structures.

Although this part of Quito should be full of tourists, the businesses here are very much geared toward the local population. The tourist-oriented shops, restaurants, and hotels are all in the much less picturesque New Town.

Puntas/Ecuadorian moonshine

by malianrob

We drank waaaaaay too much of this on New Years. Basically from what i understand it is made from sugarcane, fermentates and it becomes a very powerful drink. I am sure theres more to it but i dont know.
It is not something that you will find at the local liquor store or markets as it is illegal to sell but it isnt illegal to make.
So, my cousins brought this over and we drank quite a few shots. It is similar to the Colombian Aguadiente.
The taste isnt too good but you can put pieces of fruit into the flask of puntas let it sit for a few days and it gives it a better taste.
I went one day to buy some of this Puntas with my cousins. I wanted to take some back to the States to have my friends try it out. We ended up going to someones house near Pululahua, it was super inexpensive. I later found out that i wouldve been in big trouble if the authorites new I had this on the plane.
Nonetheless, try the drink, dont bring it on the plane.

Go in the fall, dress in layers

by b1bob

In the fall, it can go as low as 10°C (50°), but it can go as high as 25°C (77°) and there is that (nearly) inevitable afternoon rain at that time of year. The best option is to dress in layers. For the most part, I packed short sleeve shirts together with a light windbreaker and a heavier jacket. Look at the weather report before you plan your next day's activities.

by montxito

The town of Guapulo is a bohemian district with small cafes and bars. A steep walkway from the Hotel Quito leads down to the area offering an excellent afternoon escape from the city.

The town's location offers Guapulo warmer temperatures than Quito. Many locals and seasoned tourists alike can be seen spending the weekend afternoons enjoying the sunshine on the decks of one of the local restaurants.

The Basilica of Guapulo, built in 17th century, is worth the short trip from Quito. Guapulo was the birthplace of the Quiteñan Style of Art. The art treasures housed there are among the best in the continent including paintings, gilded alters, and stone carvings.

Nightlife in Jose Camala Street - Gringoland

by Maillekeul about The Street itself !!! La rue entiere !!!

It's Gringo Land !!! Every guide will indicate this place, but it's really worth going there : you will get everything you want : Internet, good meals, good drinks, nice music....
On daytime, it's a very cute street, melting colours and origins....
Very tasty !

C'est bien Gringoland, indique dans tous les guides ... mais ca vaut le detour ! On trouve de tout : Internet, plats typiques ou etrangers, boissons, musique tendance...
De jour, la rue est l'une des plus gaies de Quito.
