Best kept secret in Quito

We loved San Jorge, from the moment we were collected from Quito in the evening, it was a wonderful experience. Cheryl was a super resource prior to our arrival. Having never travelled in Ecuador, we had plenty of pre-arrival questions and she patiently answered them all. She also arranged for a driver for us from the Quito airport to the lodge. That got us off to a great start. When we arrived and were shown our room we just felt like we had gone to the best home in the world. The rooms are lovely, they have a nice feel about them .The rooms at all 3 lodges were all so comfortable and spacious but considering you get transportation to and from Quito, 3 big meals each day, expert guides and a nice room, it is good deal. Great little place - very clean and nicely decorated, with en suite bathrooms. Everything is spotless, the resort is nestled up in the hills just outside the city so all you hear at day or night are the soothing sounds of the jungle. All the lodging at Tandayapa & Milpe was carefully designed to offer comfort to the traveler yet preserve the environment and rainforest ambience. The cabanas at Tandayapa & Milpe were well concealed into the lush surroundings. They are spaciously designed for double or triple occupancy, and have screened in windows to guard against insects while you sleep. This has to be one of the best experiences of my travels to date. Tandayapa is perched high in the cloud forest, seemingly in the middle of nowhere. The air is clean and fresh and the walks are fabulous. The Botanical and Birding tours were superb. As beginners , Dr George Cruz was patient and kind .He walked closely with us to ensure that we understood the highlights of the tours . He made everything interesting and connected his lectures to what we know or understood, making everything an extremely educational and fun experience.

Dr. Cruz was a walking encyclopedia of history, culture , birding and botany.I have never been so impressed by the knowledge base of a guide , as I was with him. I was amazed with the variety of the cuisine ! The meals were exquisite. I was tantalized each day with a different meal, one meal was only surpassed by the next and the next. I can not think of anything you can improve at this time. My hope is that the service does not change as the franchise expends!!

My only regret is we didn't stay longer. We lucked out and were the only people staying there and had a hard time leaving. We will be back!!!

Nature Setting Above Quito

Reasonably close to the airport, an historic hacienda and nature preserve in the foothills above Quito and far from city noise and congestion, Hosteria San Jorge is one of three lodges of 'The Magic Birding Circuit." Cozy and comfortable rooms, great food, and friendly staff. For nature lovers, San Jorge is a good choice for that first night after the long flight to Quito. If you're into birdwatching, it just gets better if you take the multi-day guided tour to the Tandayapa and Milpe lodges and other hotspots. Our six day trip netted more than 220 bird species, colorful frogs, orchids, mischievous tayras, hidden waterfalls, and more. Tour prices are also quite reasonable including food, lodging, transportation, and guiding.

Unique Quality: All three lodges are surrounded by nature, quiet, and have excellent views over Quito and the nearby cloud forest. We were most impressed by the very attentive and friendly staff, excellent Ecuadorian cuisine. and of course, the great time we had becoming friends with the enthusiastic and knowledgeable owner, Jorge Cruz, and his family.
