Great Historic Hotel

The Hotel Patio Andaluz is a great hotel in a very historic building one block from the Plaza Grande. My stay here was very good and the staff very helpful.

Quito's hidden jewel

When looking for a hotel for 2 days for our stay in Quito I came across this place. The website looked great but you know that sometimes can be misleading. What a shock when we walked through the front door. Beautiful place! Our room had 2 floors with a balcony overlooking the courtyard.

The service, food and rooms were fabulous. It was a serene private oasis away from the hustle and bustle of the historical area. We wanted to relax as we had just completed hiking the Inca Trail and we were here for our next journey to the Galapagos.

Nicest hotel in Quito. Highly recommended!

Unique Quality: This building is said to be 400 years old. Great architecture. The staff was very friendly, tea/coffee was available free at all times in the library. Food was very good ($8-$12US per entree). Free internet (1 computer).

The location was great. Most people stay in the "new area" (Gringolandia) but I would recommend staying in this area. It's much safer and interesting save for a few restaurants in the new area.

Quito Hotel + Otavalo day trip

by cl3150

1. What is the best location to stay in Quito...safe neighborhood, restaurants, etc. My travel agent suggests the Swissotel and Marriott, but says the Marriott is far from the center of things.

2. What is a realistic cost for a private tour including car and driver to make a day trip to the Otavalo market, returning to Quito late that afternoon?

Other suggestions?

Carl

Well, if you are not interested in staying in a hotel so the best way is to live with a ecuadorian family and ask them to take you there.
If you need my help you can write to cp_bedoyacabezas@yahoo.dk. I have a furnished flat and a family that could help you.

carl- why on earth do you want to stay in an overpriced marriot when there are so many lovely boutique hotels in quito? you might want to check out cafe cultura,Mansion Del Angel, or the Patio Andaluz if you want to stay in the colonial sector.
just about every hotel has a reference for private tour drivers, but i'm not sure what the otavalo rate would be, since i just took the bus from quito for $2

Yeah both of those hotels are fine and in safe locations, in general the safest area to stay is in the North like around the Carolina Park but there are also some really nice hotels in the Mariscal and in the Centro Historico. In both these locations it is pretty safe if you are in the center of things, like on Calama St. in the Mariscal and near the Pres. Palace in the Centro Historico but if you go even two blocks outside of that sector, it gets dangerous at night.

As far as the trip to Ambato goes, a guide will probably charge you $50 a person depending how big your party is. The more people, the bigger the discount. There are so many tour agencies in the mariscal in Quito that you can shop around and find the best price.
Good luck and happy travels!

You could try Swissotel, it's about 10 minutes of colonial centre, 5 minutes of Amazonas' bars, 15 minutes of shopping centre.

Also you can find transportation easily, if you want to do a do a private trip to Otavalo ask to any travel agency, but if you like nature I suggest to visit Mindo, similar distance to Otavalo.
