Naranja is the work of art of a local artist who thoughtfully converted her 100 year old family home into a bright and airy guest house. The open courtyard is covered with a translucent material that lets light in but allows sitting out even if it’s raining. You can look down from any floor from the open catwalks which feature great old carved wood railings. The rooms vary quite a bit by size and amenities as you might expect in the renovation of an old home into rental units. The first room we looked at was cheaper but was extremely small. In fact, it was little more than a closet! It would have been okay if it was very cheap but it was about the price of an average Ecuadorian room and it was our first exposure to a room in Cuenca. After seeing the room we eventually chose there was no looking back.

It was quite a cozy and big/bright room with a nice area to sit and even its own little kitchen and private bath. It had very cool furniture and one could imagine living there long term though it could have used some new (and more colorful, the owner IS an artist, right?!) paint. There is a communal kitchen if your room does not have one and a nice area to sit out though we found it a bit dark in the evenings. Naranja is also very well located; in an area you can walk around at night and feel safe as well as being close to all attractions. It is a bit overpriced at $25 (which included the city’s exorbitant 12% tax) for a double per night for two but as Cuenca goes it seems to be a bargain.

This place has character! All the rooms are centered around an enclosed courtyard that also serves as a cafe. The rooms are incredibly nice considering the price, and the breakfast in the cafe is relaxing. Rooms are full service, with cable, minibar, safe, and room service. The bathrooms are big, clean, and NICE. The location is perfect - just one block away from the main town square and just 4 blocks from the river. You can walk to just about anywhere from this hotel - and parking is just one block away despite the hotel's central location.

Hotel Victoria in Cuenca: Elegant and Well Situated
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • I arrived without a reservation at the end of a long and exhausting day (see my Alausi page). The taxi ride from the bus station took five minutes. The building is a chunky brick edifice which would not look out of place in San Francisco (think Ghirardelli). My room was most attractive, with a terrace on the river. The 29-room hotel is elegant and very quiet. Although the building is historical (circa 1900, I would guess), the rooms are decorated in a contemporary style, with much polished wood and recessed halogen lights. The concierge Silvia was very helpful throughout my stay. Breakfast is included, and served in the fancy-looking "El Jardin" restaurant downstairs. The hotel is across the street from the Museum of Aboriginal Cultures, and within easy walking distance of everything of interest in historical Cuenca. However, the immediate neighborhood is a bit dark and empty after sunset.

Casa Naranja: Cuenca's place to relax
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Casa Naranja is a restored colonial house with a big patio. When I was there, I was the only person staying there. And as i needed some quiet, relaxing days, it was perfect. But it would also be great to go there with a group of people, you can enjoy lying in a hammock in the patio, listen to music and cook your own food in the kitchen. The owner is a really nice old lady. The rooms are normally big and clean, except from mine: the only single room is a bit shabby and narrow, but it has two little floors. And it's actually cute!

A wonderful patio with hammocks, a lot of plants, tables, a radio and a kitchen!!!! Perfect when you are fed up with chicken and rice every day! You can cook your own delicious food... The owner is really nice (and tries her best, although her english is almost nonexistent, but her daughter speaks english).

El Cafecito: I just love it!
  • Tip Rating:
  • Satisfaction:
  • Cafecito is at the same time a nice hostal, a good restaurant, a bar and the place to meet! It is actually the meeting point where open-minded locals wanna meet tourists... The atmosphere is unique, the stuff allways ready for a smile. They have a wonderful garden to relax and always nice music! But if you wanna stay in a hostal which is nice and quiet, this is not the place for you! It can be really noisy til 2 o'clock or even later. (excpet you are so lucky to get one of the spare rooms in the backyard...) It is the place for young backpackers!

I love the atmosphere! Nice paintings and good music (from salsa to triphop to manu chao...) It is the place to meet locals! Happy Hour from 5 to 7. And I really liked the chili con carne!

Hotel Inca Real: Lovely colonial hotel in Cuenca, Ecuador

This is a typical colonial hotel in Ecuador. The rooms all surround an (in the case) indoor courtyard. The Inca Real has an excellent downtown location, and has a variety of rooms and room types, with an accompanying range of prices. My advice is to get the bigger rooms. They're a LOT bigger and they're not that much more money.

The hotel is clean, quiet and located well. The morning breakfast is very filling and well-cooked. There are an assortment of local eateries within an easy walk of the Inca Real.

Oro Verde Cuenca Hotel: Full Service Hotel   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Oro Verde is probably the most 'Equipped' hotel in all of Cuenca. Though it is on the outskirts of town, cheap taxis make it easy to get in, and the comfort of the hotel might be a must to some people. I have never stayed at the hotel, but do know many people who have and have been very happy with it.

In the heart of the old city stands Alli Tiana in a tall building with the greatest views from its roof restaurant. Locals come here often to have dinner and enjoy the sight through the glass walls of the restaurant. Night views are magical!!! The name comes from old local language and means "welcome" if I remember well. The elegant proprietor, Mario, is usually there to welcome you and always eager to help you out with everything. It is not a luxurious hotel but it is perfectly fine. Service is perfect and the rooms are pleasant and spacious and are cleaned every day. There is cable TV, telephone, private bath with hot water and good beds. A bottle of water and chocolates await for you when you come back! Its location is very convenient as you are in the center of the action. Of course there is traffic noise during the day, but I avoided it by taking a room at the back. Prices are around 20$US including a decent local breakfast. Tours can be arranged in the hotel at good prices. Click on the photo

Crespo: Stylish Hotel on the Tomebamba River   Compare Rates NEW!
  • Satisfaction:
  • The Crespo is well located and oozing with character. Inside, it's a bit maze-like, and every room is unique. Beware though that some of the inside rooms are cramped and stuffy....be sure to get one with an outside window, better yet, one facing the river. The town center is just a short walk away.

If you manage to get a room facing the river, you will be very pleased!
