Travel Tips for Arequipa

Ubinas volcano Arequipa

by ashpad1

4 hours rough ride, but shorter and probably better than colca canyon, this is a 3 hour climb to the top with a spectacular lunar crater at the top that continuously spews gas. Special masks will be provided by your guide. On the way back u can stop at Lagunas Salinas which is spectacular. A good day trip, possibly better than the other options available.

top is 5,600m high but the jeep goes up to 5,000m. There is usually no one else on this climb. The desert scenery is amazing, and i was lucky to see a bunch of Vicunyas at 5,000m in the desert where there were barely a few shrubs growing. Amazing sight!

MONASTERIO DE SANTA CATALINA

by swesn

The Santa Catalina Monastery is the most interesting sight in Arequipa. It is a walled colonial miniature town of over 20,000 sq-m. For over 400 years, the complex is totally forbidden to outsiders and the over 400 nuns live in absolute seclusion, tended by some women servants.

It was built in 1580 and was enlarged in the 17th century. It is of predominantly Mudejar style, with many colourfully and vividly painted walls (think cobalt blue, deep orange). At this time, there are only about 20 nuns left and they live in one section of the convent. Visitors now can wander around and enjoy the maze of cobbled streets, flower gardens and plazas, cloisters and buttressed houses.

Casa del Moral

by kiwigal_1

Moral House is another spectacular 18th Century mansion made of the typical Arequipan volcanic stone, "sillar". The front entrance has an amazing stone carving over the doorway. Inside there are displays of furniture of Peru's colonial period. A visit to Moral house is worth it to just see the interior patio and gardens which are just beautiful. The house gets its name from an ancient blackberry tree (called a Moral in Spanish) that grows in the main courtyard.

In 2000 the Casa del Moral was named a UNESCO world heritage site.

Changed Plans - on to Arequipa and Colca Canyon

by DFWOutdoors

We were disappointed that we were not going to be able to see Lake Titicaca. But now we had a different adventure - a 6 hour bus ride to the Colca Canyon. An early morning flight from Lima put us in Arequipa by mid morning. We checked into our hotel, Casa Andina, and were given some direction to the central square. We had the whole day to sight see before we were to meet up at the hotel for dinner. Again we split up into different groups. The group with me was hungry so we went strolling through the square looking for a restaurant. We picked one with a balcony overlooking the square and the church. We enjoyed some free Pisco Sours (see tips for info on that) and more ceviche. After a late lunch we headed down to the Museo Sanctuarios Andinos to see Juanita, the frozen 14 year old Ampato girl mummy found frozen in the Andes. We all met up back at the hotel and went to the Zig Zag restaurant for dinner. A few beers at a nearby pub ended the evening. We had an early morning bus that would take us over the mountains into the Colca Canyon.
