Travel Tips for Arequipa

Highlights of Arequipa

by acemj

For me, the highlights of Arequipa are the Spanish colonial architecture in the city center, the Santa Catalina Monastery and the fact that it is a good base for visiting the Colca Canyon. The white sillar stone used all over the city gives it an airy, light feel in the hot sun and high altitudes. The monastery is a little slice of peace and serenity and a photographer's delight with it's quirky little corners and quarters and quiet little courtyards. The Colca Canyon which is only a few hours away, is supposedly twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA and makes for a great one or two day trip from Arequipa.

Colca Canyon

by darthmilmo

Check out my Colca Canyon Page. The Colca Canyon is the second deepest Canyon in the world. It's a true beauty to be hold. Enjoy some days treking in the area, or if you're like me just take the bus :). There is a nice colony of Andean Condors in the area of the mirador del Condor worth a look.

The Ice Maiden

by toonsarah

One place I'd really recommend in Arequipa is the Museo Santuarios Andinos where you can see the famous "Juanita, La Niña de los Hielos", a 550 year old Inca girl sacrifice found in 1995 by mountaineers in the ice on the summit of a nearby volcano. An adjacent volcano had erupted and blown ash to melt the summit snow to reveal her sacrificial site.

Juanita is displayed in a glass case along with a number of artifacts found with her, and lots of information about the Inca practice of human sacrifice. There's a also a good film about her discovery.

I thought it might seem a bit disrespectful to display her body in this way but I found that the museum has done a great job of doing this while still respecting the fact that she was a real person and treating her accordingly. I was very moved by the opportunity to see her and learn about her short life.

Church of Sachaca

by besbel

This Sachaca's church, as well as Casa Goyeneche and the belvedere, is one of the main attractions of this little district. Dated from 1807, it is a beautiful sample of the decoration and architecture of all churches in Peruvian countryside (I mean, simple architecture and one single tower).

Arequipa, Peru

by crummey

"Arqeuipa, Peru"

The city of Arequipa is about 6000 or 7000 feet in the mountains. It is nestled in between three snow capped volcanos. Apparently there are over 70 active and dormant volcanoes in the Province of Arequipa.

Arequipa is beautiful, all cut volcanic stone. And the people in southern Peru seem richer than northern Peru. They also have a strong regional identity.

Old Arquipa is reminiscent of Old Quebec City. It is quite nice. Arequipa has wonderful architecture and it is clean and beautiful and the faucets and toilets sometimes work.

They have bull fights here on the weekend, and dog fights and cock fights too.
