Colca canyon 2 or 3 days ??

by misterno683

My dilemma is: 2 or 3 days ?
I don't have much time and I would know if 2 days could be a good compromise.
Thanks!!!

Hi, the Colca Canyon was one of the highlights of my trip to Peru. I did a 3d/2n tour...spending two nights in the Canyon. Its a fair amount of walking to the bottom of the Valley and back up again. There are a few places with pools at the bottom...accomodations are basic...but cheap.Next time i go to Peru, will do the hike again..but independantly.Personally i would have liked to spent more time in the Canyon. So my two cents worth...take 3 days. Enjoy Peru!

And another question: do you book the tour on Arequipa (shopping around) or before leaving your contry???
Bye!!

Book in Arequipa. I paid 35 usd...a couple of years ago for the tour.It turned out it was just two of us plus a guide. It included lodging and food and the guide. Had to pay a bit extra for the bus... public transportation to the Canyon. Also paid 10 usd for Valley of the Condor Park fee. There's lots of places in Arequipa that offer tours...only drawback of the place i booked through,i didn't find the guide to be personable or informative. He seemed to just keep rushing us..I take alot of pictures. So shop around ....maybe see if you can meet the guide first.

Hey,
just check out this homepage
www.aboutarequipa.com
there are tours available for both 2 and 3 days. I did the 2 day tour and it was sufficient. But if you want to see more and maybe sleep a little longer then I woud recommend you the 3 day tour.
So have fun and enjoy it.
I loved it!!!

If you have cultural iinterests you just can visit the colca canyon in 2 days, about the price of this tours it will depends on the kind of hotel you would like to stay.
I do recommend this tour, where you can see amazing views. I made 2 days tour with Perou Voyage and I paid 70 dollars for me and my girlfriend (including transportation, guide and an excellent hotel). It was a very good cost-benefit relation. The agency was serious, with good guide, good driver, safety car, a good service. But be sure that you will stay and eat at the Casa Andina Hotel (they have a great planetarium). We highly recommend Perou Voyage, check their website perutravel-tours.com.

Travel Tips for Arequipa

Local snack

by acemj

Just across from La Compañía you'll find a couple good heladerias (ice cream shops). Be sure to try the Queso Helado (literally cheese ice cream), which is somewhat of a local delicacy. I'm not sure if there's actually cheese in this concoction or if it's just frozen milk with some sugar and cinnamon, but it sure tastes good.

vegetarian fare

by richiecdisc about Govinda

Pleasant alternative eating with relaxed atmosphere and vegetarian food, a great departure from the more typical meat of fish dishes popular in Peru. Papa a la huancaina is made with cold potatoes covered with a rich sauce made of egg and cheese. It's generally quite spicy and this one was served with some fried cheese on the side.

One of the deepest canyon on earth...

by christian99

COLCA CANYON
Most people who visit Arequipa take a tour out to the Cañon de Colca, one of the worlds deepest canyons formed by an enormous seismic fault between the Coropuna (6425m) and Ampato (6325m) volcanoes. The tour can be arranged on arrival in Arequipa at one of the several tour operators or travel agents around the Plaza. Many hotels can also arrange this activity. Although a tour can be fit into one day, it's best to go for at least 2 days, staying the night at the village of Chivay (3633m) the first village on the edge of the canyon.
Remember to bring a swimming costume and towel for a visit to the thermal springs on the outskirts of Chivay. (Open 0600 - 1900. Entrance $1.50)
Beautiful unspoiled Andean villages line both sides of the canyon. In addition you'll have great views of the smoking Sabancaya volcano, one of the America's most active volcanoes, as well seeing the many traditional pre-Inca agricultural terraces which line the steep valley sides.
The high point of the tour is an early morning visit to La Cruz del Cóndor (3320m), a 1½ hours drive from Chivay. From this natural observatory you can see into the deepest part of the canyon, and witness the majestic flight of the Andean Condor, rising on the morning thermals (at around 9am

arequipa - la ciudad blanca

by willy_wonka

arequipa is a stunning city, and well worth a visit if time allows on any peruvian trip. alot of the time, due to short itineraries, and the fact that cusco/machu picchu is more popular (and rightly so) alot of people miss this city. if you have the time, dont make this mistake, because arequipa and the nearby colca canyon are a delight.

arequipa is known as the 'white city' because of its fabulous 'sillar' architecture. sillar is a white volcanic rock that is easily workable, and thus the colonial buildings that can be found here are beautifully crafted. monasteries, churches and fancy mansions - all glistening white in the sunshine.

all this stunning architecture means that arequipa is a unesco world heritage sight, and rightly so. as unesco states on their website:

"The historical center of Arequipa is an example of ornamented architecture, represents a masterpiece of the creative coalition of European and native characteristics. A colonial town challenged by the conditions of nature, the indigenous influences, the conquest process and evangelism as well as for a spectacular natural scenario."

i couldnt agree more!!! :)
