Travel Tips for Arequipa

Great Operator for tours to Colca Canyon

by VZ-Pam

Colonial Tours

Santa Catalina 106 - Arequipa, Peru

We had used this company for our tour at the arequipa colca canyon tour 2 days 1 night.
The tour guide was responsible, humorous & knowledgeable.
The Peruvian traditional dance performance with dinner they arranged was fun & at decent price. Buffets arranged by them were good too.

We had the tour arranged thru our hostel at 60 soles per person not including meals & the entrance tickets. You may get a better price if you go directly to the agency since everything in Peru seems to be negotiable.

Huaynaputina volacno

by christian99

In the year 1600, Huaynaputina erupted violently, giving rise to the biggest eruption of South America of the last 500 years. Today, the surrounding area is still capped by a thick layer of white pumice that gives a unique aspect to the landscape. A spectacular trek of 3 days allows you to cross the whole Huaynaputina massif from south to north, passing by the crater. The vast uninhabited, moonlike volcanic massif and the final descent into the vertiginous canyon of Rio Tambo will make of this trek an unforgettable experience .

Visit Toro Muerto

by bsfreeloader

The Toro Muerto petroglyphs are easily visited independently on a day trip from Arequipa. Consisting of carved boulders strewn about over several kilometers of desert, the petroglyphs will be of most interest to archeologists, historians, and those who enjoy art. One nice thing about Toro Muerto is that you are likely to have the entire area to yourself, which is rarely the case in tourist-friendly Peru.

Monasterio de Santa Catalina.

by euzkadi

This huge convent is one of the wonders of Arequipa, is like a city inside a city, chapels, cloisters, gardens, it covered more than 20,000 meters. A good way to visit the convent is by a local guide (90 minutes visit).

Arequipa

by carlitoab

This beautiful city in the south is well worth a visit. If you are flying from Lima, make sure you get a window seat, the views are stunning - the landscape's texture makes you wonder whether your still on Earth and not Mars! If you're taking the trouble to visit Arequipa, then it's well worth your while visit the Colca Canyon. It is around ten times cheaper to book a tour which is usually overnight rather than doing it through an agency before you arrive. Don't worry - there are thousands of places offering tours so competition is high, hence prices are low and places are ample! Also, if you are unaware of altitude sickness - take some Mate de Coca as soon as possible otherwise you will regret not doing so!

A: "There are no direct flights Arequipa-Tacna. The only way to fly Arequipa-Tacna is with LAN Perú via Lima but at a price."
