HOTELS...
Sonesta Posada del Inca Lake Titicaca, Puno (tel. 051/364-111): Gracing the shores of Lake Titicaca, this hotel is warmly designed, with a roaring fireplace and lots of Peruvian art. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, and many have great views of the lake. Families might be especially interested in the tiny version of a Lake Titicaca floating community.
Hotel Libertador Arequipa, Arequipa (tel. 054/215-110): Housed in a nice 1940s-era colonial-style building a bit removed from the colonial center of Arequipa, this upscale hotel has a relaxed, almost homey feel. It has authentic colonial touches and plenty of space to stretch out, as well as a large outdoor pool and lush gardens. A good family hotel, it has a game area for children.
Hotel El Dorado Plaza, Iquitos (tel. 065/222-555): Although not overly fancy or oozing with character, the El Dorado Plaza is by far the best place to stay in Iquitos. It was the first-ever luxury hotel in town, and it boasts a perfect location on the Plaza de Armas and good service. Rooms are large, and the great pool is a fine place to relax after a jungle excursion. It's a very good value if you get a deal, too.
Hotel Posada del Puruay, Cajamarca (tel. 076/828-318, or 01/336-7869 for reservations): In the gorgeous highland countryside just outside Cajamarca, this country hotel is a restored 1830 farmhouse. The great grounds, with gardens, horses, and amenities such as a barbecue pit, are sure-fire selling points, but the inn also has huge rooms, friendly personal service, a very good restaurant, and an extensive video library.
