get ready to take lots of photos!
by richiecdisc
With its sunny arid climate, you can finally enjoy walking around in shorts and sandals if you have them. But it's not that low in altitude so carry a pullover for when the sun goes down. Sunblock, I did say sunny! Make sure you bring lots of film, there is so much to take photos of in this marvelous city. A wide angle is an essential in taking photos of buildings as you are often closer than you want to be and a circular polarizer helps reduce the glare of the high Andean sun. D's a great person to travel with, she likes taking photos as much as me. :)
Monasterio Santa Catalina

Covering one whole block of houses, this huge and beautiful monastery is more like a small village.
Take a guided tour if you can; English speaking guides are available and the tour is very interesting!!
Plaza de Yanahuara - with mirador

This plaza in the Yanahuara suburb is a nice place to walk around. It seems to be a place where couples come. There is also a mirador where you can get a pretty good view of the volcano El Misti and Arequipa.
Arequipa
by bsfreeloader
Of all the cities in Peru I visited, Arequipa was my favorite. Large enough to boast a wide variety of very good restaurants, yet small enough not to overwhelm, Arequipa sits at the edge of the Andes. A day’s ride from Lima, the city is framed by snow-capped peaks and is home to one of the finest Plazas de Armas in all of Peru. Colonial Arequipa’s rather stark and clinical white sillar stone architecture contrasts sharply with some of the Baroque-inspired facades. This unique architecture is easily observed by taking a walking tour of some of the many churches and monasteries surrounding the Plaza de Armas.
