Parador del Colca: Quiet luxury in the Colca Canyon

This is a beautiful small lodge in the Colca Canyon near Chivay. There are only seven rooms, all within the one building, which is a traditionally styled long house. The eighth room at the end of the row is a small, cozy dining room, where we ate some of the best meals of our holiday!

The lodge is run on eco principles - energy for the lodge is both solar and via a diesel generator. This would make a great place for a quiet hideaway for a couple of days, as well as making a good base for exploring the canyon.

This is a peaceful place in which to unwind, so don't expect too many modern touches (although you can get very slow internet access in the bar). Instead, you get some lovely welcoming touches, such as the beeswax candles burning in your room when you retire for the night - not to mention the two hot water bottles in each bed and the slippers lined up beside them. Everything speaks of the care that's gone into this lodge, as does the friendly welcome.

This hotel can only be booked as part of an itinerary as they do not do stand-alone bookings. The price I've given is therefore a guess! If you're booking a tailor-made tour do ask if you can include this as it really is a special place.

Oasis: despite the nibbler, not bad....

I think you have to imagine the whole scenario to appreciate how we felt when we first saw our little hut. We had walked for about four hours, two of it straight down 3400 meters in the midday sun. We were so happy to get there after seeing the little swimming pool grow larger with each step, that any room would have seemed great.

In the daylight, the bamboo hut seemed so romantic, with the sun's warm rays shining through the spaces between the reeds. It was a spartan affair, but it was in the bottom of the "deepest" canyon in the world, who were we to complain? I imagine it is quite cheap if you go independently and it would be dorm style at a busy time of year but it was included in our three day trip, and we had it to ourselves. ;=>

HOSTAL VALLE DE FUEGO: HOSTAL VALLE DE FUEGO

It´s located 3 minutes walking from the 'main square' of Cavanaconde, where the bus leaves you. Cavanaconde is the last village you can go by bus from Arequipa by bus.
You can ask how to go to the hostal, but probably there will be somebody offering you a bedroom there before you open your mouth!
Bedrooms cost 10 soles (3€). per person and night in 2007
You can also have a diner/lunch for 10 soles (3€) per person. We had for dinner that night:
- Thick soup of vegetables.
- Choose from pasta or rice.
- Choose from trout or alpaca meat.
- Coffe or coca tea.

Brrrrrrrrrr!!!!!

I cannot remember the name of the hotel (I will look through my papers). It is by a pizzeria that i absolutely DO NOT recommend. The hotel that we stayed in was FREEZING!!!!!! I slept with all my clothes on, shoes and all! I'm not sure if there was any hot water because we did not use the showers (we went to the hot springs earlier). It was definitely a budget hotel, so it was acceptable.
